
President Truman Ends Military Segregation On July 26, 1948
President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981 to end racial discrimination in the United States Armed Forces. The segregation of the military eventually evolved from this order. A. Phillip Randolph and Grant Reynolds can receive much of the credit for expediting the end to military segregation by establishing in 1947 the Committee Against Jim Crow in Military Service and Training which was later named the League for Non-Violent Civil Disobedience Against Military Segregation. This organization pressured President Truman to end racial discrimination in the military. Truman may also have been influenced by a need for the African American vote.
