"The Census Bureau defends its use of the word. Spokesman Jack Martin said "Negro" was intended as a term of inclusion."

"Many older African-Americans identified themselves that way, and many still do," he said. "Those who identify themselves as Negroes need to be included."

Big deal or not a big deal?

My question, is there real value in the government asking for race information in the census? My answer will be other/human, as I do not buy into the concept of race, and I think the government is perpetuating this division on its citizens.

The United States does place too much emphasis on classifying people by their ethnicity. Did you hear of the story Lou Dobbs did about a guy in NJ being threatened for saying he was African American? I will try to google that story and post the link. I chose to not answer questions on applications about ethnicity, because they are completely voluntary--- Perhaps I should write in my race next time as the Human Race.

Mr. Weston, thanks for the blog, and I hope it gets the attention due. I've been thinking a lot about this census.
