Whatever Marva Collins did with Chicago students could definitely be examined for possible wider use. She definitely got good results.

I also think that parents (and students themselves) need to take more responsibility for their academic performance (i.e. turning off the TV to study, reading as a family, visiting the library with children from early-early ages).

Learning first starts at home. Question is are we parents doing our part?

I believe there will always be room for improvement when it comes to schools rather private or public. The school system has many roles aside from being a learning institution nowadays. Teachers spend more time disciplining than teaching in some schools, aside from playing counselor and consultant, and the list goes on.

I look at schools as if they are social playgrounds for children in a large part. Honestly, if I could home school my child, I probably would, if it weren't for the fact school is where children have the opportunity to disconnect from the home, experience the real world, make friends, associate with peers, develop socialization skills and the like.

I love the fact that we have options nowadays... We don't have to send our kids to a school in our district, or even a public school, and we can home school if we like...

As long as we have options, and as Dorothy put it above, those questions seem irrelevant... Who are parents to complain...?

Education is a community effort. It takes a village, as they say.

And Maryanne, it is great to see that you are aware of the many options out there. Only those parents concerned enough to educate themselves about the opportunities available to their children are aware of the possibilities. Knowledge is power And that goes for parents as well as students.
