With the country focused on the debates in Washington around Education budgets and federal involvement in states’ individual education programs, it’s important to focus on the key facts that are driving this renewed focus on the fundamental of education: Graduation Statistics.

According to the Alliance for Excellent Education, our kids and our nation are in real peril.

• Approximately 31% of all high school students fail to graduate with a regular diploma within four years.

• The yearly-earning gap between high-school graduates and dropouts an be as much as $10,000. This earning deficiency can have an effect on the whole community.

• The potential cost of dropouts from the class of 2008 can be as much as $319 billion in lost wages over their lives.

• White and Asian students have a higher possibility of graduating in comparison with Hispanic of African American students, causing a continued detriment on these particular communities in the US.

Part of the federal focus on the high school graduation rates is the creation of country-wide standards to improve accountability and graduation-rate calculations to more effectively evaluate and fight these factors.

It is important that communities take action to reduce dropout rates and educate our children on the benefits of high school graduation to give our country a fighting chance to build a better future.
