"Why do some kids automatically go to college and others never even think about it?"

Why do some kids automatically go to college while others never even think about it as an option?

As a parent of two, I was perusing a Parenting magazine and couldn't help but notice the numerous ads for preschool "prep" schools that boast of their impressive alumni. I was discussing with a friend how their were no children of color in any of these ads.

It made me ponder the question are some kids programmed to succeed earlier on in life than others? When is it too late to get caught up? Why are so many of our children of color (especially our boys) not going to college?

Let's DISCUSS!

Success happens to people who prepare for it and better yet for children of parents who invest in it (kids success). I can't speak for other Black parents, but I'm investing in my child's future now (he's five and we're started a tax free account) as well as making sure he's excelling in the things a child is suppose to know for his age group. I know this may be an unpopular example, but Tiger Wood's father taught him the game of golf and helped him perfect his game. The Williams' sisters' father did the same for them regarding tennis...

Hi Jen! Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. How DO U benchmark how your child is performing?

Jen Fad Monday, August 16th 2010 at 11:39PM

Since before he was born, I joined a group online called babycenter
http://www.babycenter.com/big-kid which has neat milestones and learning tips for what kids his age should be conquering and mastering. I also utilize online resources to make sure he's doing what he should be at his age.

No I haven't. Do I have to be a member of HBCU? Here's another interesting site called School Matters where you can look up a school in your district to check Benchmarks

Yes! I love that one too! It provides awesome data and emails U whenever the status changes.

No. U do not have to be affiliated with a HBCU to engage in any of our resources.

We have a list of all our favorite sites A-Z that I will post.

Hi,
Teach them that finishing school means finishing college.

Pick their friends from among those who believe the same thing.

Send them to schools whos aim is to prepare them for college.

Make sure they have good balck teachers in a quality black environment.

Be sure they attend schools that will teach them about themselves and their language all the way through.

You have precious babies. I want the best for them. They are our future.

Yes! Yes! I love my munchkins and we keep them uplifted in prayer and life preparation activities. Thomasena believe me...they are being EQUIPPED for battle...but I am MOST concerned with those who are NOT AS FORTUNATE.

We are hosting a radio show the first Saturday in September on Education. Would U be willing to come on and share your tips above to the listeners? Here is the link.
