Fröbel’s student Margarethe Schurz founded the first kindergarten in the United States at Watertown, Wisconsin in 1856, and she also inspired Elizabeth Peabody, who went on to found the first English-speaking kindergarten in the United States… Froebel 'Gifts' and the Montessori apparatus, which he used to demonstrate to students the difference in approach of the two systems – Froebel's being creative and play-based, while Montessori's was 'right-or-wrong' and not play-based.
