WHAT IS FAITH?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. · Saturday, December 20th 2014 at 10:32AM · 1192 views
What is faith?

Faith is one of those words that is difficult to tie down to one simple definition.

POPULAR DEFINITIONS:

According to a modern dictionary, faith is "unquestioning belief that does not require proof or evidence." As it regards the faith found in the Bible, this is simply not true. A. A. Hodge truly said, "Faith must have adequate evidence, else it is mere superstition." Faith is not the opposite of fact or of scientific knowledge. The evidences of faith may operate differently than those of science, but they are there.

Someone else has come up with an acronym for FAITH:

Forsaking

All

I

Take

Him

This is an good illustration to use when teaching about faith, but as with most definitions of this kind, it still comes far short.

Many Bible students will give Hebrews 11:1

as the definition for faith and leave it at that. Hebrews 11:1

states, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." However, even though this is the form defintions are given in, this verse is more of an expression of the power and importance of faith than it is a definition of faith. In fact, one already needs to know what faith is before this verse will make much sense to them. This makes this verse a frustrating answer to someone who is trying to get a handle on the foundational meaning of faith.

BIBLE DEFINITION:

If you want a short definition of faith, it could be this: taking God at His word. It is true that our faith is in God. But we do not properly know the God we should believe in or know how to believe in Him unless He tells us in His word. This is why Paul says in Romans 10:17

, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Biblical faith is not an "unquestioning belief that does not require proof or evidence" (Webster's New World Dictionary). It is full confidence in God's word. FAITH accepts God's word (His promises and His warnings) as FACT and acts accordingly. Since there are many evidences that the word of God is true, this is not a blind leap of faith. It is rather an intelligent, holy reaction to the wondrous words of God.

Now it is true that faith is much more than a mental acceptance of something as true; it also involves a trust in or reliance on that something. The Reformers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries had a good approach to faith. They taught what they called the three aspects of faith. Here are the three aspects of faith:

1. Knowledge. Faith begins with a knowledge of what it is that should be believed. For instance, if someone knows that the gospel of Christ refers to the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ according to the scriptures (see 1 Corinthians 15:1-4), they have knowledge. However, it is possible for someone to know what the gospel is without believing it to be true. Therefore:

2. Assent. Knowledge is not enough. The person must also believe that the object of faith is true. To reach this level of faith, the person must know what the gospel is (knowledge) and believe it to be true (assent). But this is still not enough for salvation. That takes us to the third aspect of faith.

3. Trust. Trust refers to a personal commitment to and reliance upon an object of faith. In salvation, the sinner must know that Jesus died for him and rose again from the dead (knowledge) and he must accept that these facts are true (assent). However, he is still not saved until he relies on these facts as the basis for his personal salvation. Let me give you a couple of illustrations to help you understand these three aspects.

Good post Brother Deacon,

You have offered many wonderful definitions of faith, I would also like to think of faith as the means by which one exercises trust in the object of the understanding.

Essentially, a person exercises faith by having a trust relationship with a person. But, faith also involves a modicum of understanding (where understanding is a form of propositional knowledge) about the person who is trusted.

It is just as important to have faith in oneself as well as faith in God, as faith is part of the development stage of growth. Example: Before an infant child learns how to walk the child puts his or her faith (trust) in a person, usually the parent or other adult that teaches them. Once the child learns (knows) how to walk they know longer put their faith in someone else that they will be able to walk, they use the principles of walking to move them. Faith is what you need to begin growing, to grow, and to keep on growing and developing.

The following Bible verses can also be helpful when teaching about faith.

Habakkuk 2:4 "behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by faith."

Matt 9:29 " Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you."

Romans 1:17 " For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith."

Rom 3:3 "For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect ?"

The Qu'ran also states:

Chapter 2:28 How can ye reject the faith in God?- seeing that ye were without life, and He gave you life; then will He cause you to die, and will again bring you to life; and again to Him will ye return.

Chapter 10:009 Those who believe, and work righteousness,- their Lord will guide them because of their faith: beneath them will flow rivers in gardens of bliss.

Chapter 16:97 Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has Faith, verily, to him will We give a new Life, a life that is good and pure and We will bestow on such their reward according to the best of their actions.

Chapter 98:007 Those who have faith and do righteous deeds,- they are the best of creatures.

If Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen; then as children of the Most High, we would be amiss, to be without faith no matter what religious affiliation we identify with. For belief and faith are what we are made from. Take away faith, and we have nothing. We must have the same faith to be able to truly unite (one God).

Sister Muhammad,

I could not have said it no better. All of us uses the power of faith many times a day and may not be aware of it. For example: Where we take our love ones or family members to dinner, we put faith that our food will not make us sick. When we take a seat in that place, that we don't fall through the seat.
When we take a cab in a place that we are visiting for the first time, that we get to our destination safe and in one peace.

Thank you Sister Muhammad for your and Your Holy Bible and Holy Quran quotes.

You all can not have faith in God because you all don’t know God yet and because God has never done anything for us before now.

You all are only fooling yourselves about your faith in God. I am the only one of our Black American race that has faith in God. That is one of the reason you all voted in the spiritual for me to be our prophet!

Mr. Hodge is 110% right. I walk by site and not by faith. My faith in God is based on evidence. Evidence is truth and truth can be confirmed.

You all don’t have any faith like you think you do because you all reject the truth. What truth you all don’t reject you all try to change around to fit into you all wrong religion.

You reject that our prophet must be a Black American. Because you all want the Jewish and Arab prophets in your lives, but it is not going to happen!

You all are going to accept a Black American prophet the easy way or the hard way!

To have faith in God you have to embrace your own prophet that God has anointed. The same God that anointed the Jewish Jesus and the Arab Mohammed anointed our Black American as well!

Deacon: Thank you for a great teaching of faith. There should be more of this from you. It encourages strength to true believers as well.

************************************************************************

Sűrat AlBaqarah
(The Cow) II

In the Name of Allâah,the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

1. Alif-Lâm-Mîm

2. This is AlQur’âan, there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are AlMuttaqűn(the pious Believers of Monotheism who fear Allâah and abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden; and love Allâah by performing all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained).

3. Who believe in AlGhaib and perform AsSalât (Iqâmat AsSalât), and spend out of what We have provided for them, give Zakât, spend on themselves, their parents, their children, their wives, and also give charity to the poor and also in the way of Allâah.

4. And who believe in AlQur’âan and AsSunnah which has been revealed to Mohamed and in that which was sent down before you AtTaurât (Torah) and AlInjeel (Gospel), and belief with certainty; the Hereafter or Resurrection, recompense, a payment for their good and bad deeds, Paradise or Hell.

135. Jews or Christians say, "to be guided follow us".

Say to them Mohamed,

"No, we follow only the way of life of Ibrâheem, Hanîfa(Monotheism, to worship none but Allâah, and he was not of AlMushrikűn (those who worshipped others along with Allâah).

136. Muslims,

"We believe in Allâah and that which has been sent down to us and that which has been sent down to Ibrâheem, Ismâ‘eel, Ishâaq, Ya‘qűub, and to AlAsbât [the offspring of the twelve sons of Ya‘qűub], and that which has been given to Műsâ and ‘Îsâ, and that which has been given to the Prophets from Rabaanah.
We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we have submitted in AlIslâam."

137. So if they believe what you believe, then they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, then they are only in opposition.

144. We have seen the turning of your (Mohamed's صلى الله عليه وسلم) face towards the heaven. Surely, We shall turn you to a Qiblah (prayer direction) that shall please you, so turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid-al-Harâm. And where ever you people are, turn your faces (in prayer) in that direction.
Certainly, the people who were given the Scripture (Jews and the Christians) know well that, that (your turning towards the direction of the Ka‘bah at Makkah in prayers) is the truth from Rabaanah. And Allâah is not unaware of what they do.

145. And even if you were to bring to the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) all the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations), they would not follow your Qiblah (prayer direction), nor are you going to follow their Qiblah (prayer direction). And they will not follow each other’s Qiblah (prayer direction). If you follow their desires after that which you have received of knowledge from Allâah, then you will be one of the Zâliműn (polytheists, wrong-doers).

169. Shaitân commands you only what is evil and Fahshâ (sinful),

that you should say against Allâah what you know not.

170. When it is said to them: "Follow what Allâah has sent down."

They say:
"No! We shall follow what our fathers followed."; even though their fathers did not understand anything nor were they guided?

213. Mankind were one community and Allâah sent Prophets with glad tidings and warnings, and with them He sent down the Scripture in Truth to judge between people in matters where they differed. And ONLY those to whom -the Scripture- was given differed concerning it after clear proofs had come to them through hatred, one to another. Then Allâah guided those who believed to the truth of that where they differed. Allâah guides whom He wills to the Straight Path

255. Allâah! Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), Al-Hayyul-Qayyum (The Ever Living, The One Who sustains and protects all that exists). Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. There is nothing that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to His creatures in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. His created will never grasp anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursî extends over the heavens and the earth. He feels no fatigue in guarding, protecting and maintaining them.

Black Americans can not say they have faith in God when it is based upon the word of God and religion given to White people who are raically different from us Black Americans.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Sunday, December 21st 2014 at 5:20PM

Another example applies the three aspects to one of the promises given to believers. The Bible tells us that all things work together for good (Romans 8:28). Romans 8:28King James Version (KJV)

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Knowing that this teaching is in the Bible is knowledge. Accepting that the fact is true is assent. However, many people take these first two steps and choke at the third one, for it is in trust that we commit our own circumstances to this truth and believe that it refers to us and our own life. We are to "walk by faith" (2 Corinthians 5:7 7(For we walk by faith, not by sight)

That means that we are to live our life in such a way that the promises and warnings of God are fully accepted and applied to our own life and our particular circumstances.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Sunday, December 21st 2014 at 6:13PM

From what I have learned about the Islamic religion, faith means "submission" - submission to the will of God. Faithful Muslims, therefore, submit unreservedly to God's will and obey His precepts as set forth in the Quran and transmitted to mankind by Muhammad, His Messenger.

Muslims believe that theirs is the only true faith. Islam, they say, was revealed through a long line of prophets inspired by God.

As the chief source of Islamic doctrine and practice, the Quran is the main foundation of the shari'ah, the sacred law of Islam, which covers all aspects of the public and private, social and economic, religious and political lives of all Muslims. In addition to the Quran the shari'ah has three sources: the sunnah, the practice of the Prophet; ijma', the consensus of opinion; and qiyas, reasoning by analogy. The sunnah - which supplements and complements the Quran, the Word of God, and is next to it in importance - embodies the meticulously documented acts and sayings of the Prophet recorded in a body of writings called the hadith. Ijma' is the consensus of - qualified jurists on matters not specifically referred to in the Quran or the sunnah. Qiyas is the application of human reasoning to extend the principles found in the two primary sources - the Quran and the sunnah - to cases involving matters unknown in the early years of Islam.

To practice their faith, Muslims must accept five primary obligations which Islam imposes. Called the Five Pillars of Islam, they are: the profession of faith (shahadah), devotional worship or prayer (salah), the religious tax (zakah), fasting (sawm), and the pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj).

I have more notes to explain these five practices but I will hold here. I one talks about Faith it transcends race or religion, Faith is the word of the most high regardless of who you call him ELOHIM, YHWH, YAHWEH, JEHOVAH, ALLAH, AR-RAHMAN, AR-RAHIM, AL-MALIK or God. Faith is believing that his words is his and obeying Gods words is our most highest duty as believers in the creator of all things.

The greatest solution to the Black American man is, we need to go back home and teach our children that there is a greater power then themselves.

Harry Watley Monday, December 22nd 2014 at 12:21AM

Mr. Deacon,

You are stupid with the White man’s Christian religion in you! Don’t you know religions are racially different and that since you are not a White European gentile you can not have the White man’s Christian religion?

Mr. Deacon you must have your Black American religion named LIFE because you are a Black American.

And, the so called Muslims can not have the Arabian Islamic religion because they are Black Americans like you are Mr. Deacon. So, when you add those two sums up you will get unity of one people with one religion and now we are ready to inherit our own sovereign country as I have out-lined.

I am Black America’s first genuine prophet and everything I say is true and is going to happen. Black Americans are going to become a sovereign people in my life-time!

What do you have to offer Black Americans greater than what I am offering my son?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, December 22nd 2014 at 10:51AM

HARRY,

YOUR WORDS: You are stupid with the White man’s Christian religion in you! Don’t you know religions are racially different and that since you are not a White European gentile you can not have the White man’s Christian religion?

First of all what make you say that Christianity is a white man’s religion and not a people of color or a Black religion since GOD has been talking to his people from day one?

YOUR WORDS: Mr. Deacon you must have your Black American religion named LIFE because you are a Black American.

How can one follow a Black American religion named LIFE, when the so-called prophet have not got off his ass in seven years to bring to the people what God has said for you to do? How can one do that?

YOUR WORDS: And, the so called Muslims can not have the Arabian Islamic religion because they are Black Americans like you are Mr. Deacon. So, when you add those two sums up you will get unity of one people with one religion and now we are ready to inherit our own sovereign country as I have out-lined.

Well, I am still waiting on my copy of this BOOK CALLED “LIFE,” with the words from God in it, until that happens HARRY you are still BUMBBING AT THE GUMS and saying nothing, giving no parts of wisdom, love, knowledge, insight or GOD’S vision to help change the Black American life style towards GOD himself. We know more about you and your three dreams, than you have spoken to us about the Black American’s relationship to GOD.

So, as far as your so-called Black American religion is piss poor at best and it’s prophet with the word of GOD non-existed. Follow what!!! Where are we going? Where, is the BEEF!!!

All I ask is for you to show me this religion called LFE for the Black American. if you can't do that then what's your point?

Harry Watley Monday, December 22nd 2014 at 5:11PM

I’ve made my self clear that we Black Americans must have a Black American religion regardless to what the name is. And therefore, this will be my last comment on this blog!

I have not found any one yet that is serious about debating, dialoguing or just conversation

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, December 22nd 2014 at 8:25PM

HARRY,

Since you want answer this: First of all what make you say that Christianity is a white man’s religion and not a people of color or a Black religion since GOD has been talking to his people from day one?

Or this: Won't did God tell you to do? Let's start there?

Or this: How can one follow a Black American religion named LIFE, when the so-called prophet have not got off his ass in seven years to bring to the people what God has said for you to do? How can one do that?

or this: So, as far as your so-called Black American religion is piss poor at best and it’s prophet with the word of GOD non-existed. Follow what!!! Where are we going? Where, is the BEEF!!!

Or This: All I ask is for you to show me this religion called LFE for the Black American. if you can't do that then what's your point?

You talk about having a serious debate dialoguing or just conversation, how can one have a conversation with you, when you change the subject, won't read the material of the blog and when you find that you have been jammed, caught in a LIE, you run away, WHY?

Do you know that you have ran away from me on three subjects, just today. No correction, everything I posted today to show you the connection between the people in The Holy Bible, The slave trade and the African slave who children has became the Black American you claim to serve.

I wonder why?

robert powell Tuesday, December 23rd 2014 at 7:38PM

bottom line deacon,

1. Knowledge. Faith begins with a knowledge of what it is that should be believed. For instance, if someone knows that the gospel of Christ refers to the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ according to the scriptures (see 1 Corinthians 15:1-4), they have knowledge.

Robert,

Belief in Islam means

1.Belief in One God, Allah in Arabic.

2.Belief in all of God's messengers. Belief in Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) as His last messenger.

1.Belief in all the books sent down to His prophets. These books include Torah, Zabur, Injeel (Gospel) and Quran. The Holy Quran is the only divine book in extant today in the original revealed form.

2.Belief in the existence of angels.

3.Belief in the Day of Judgment, Life after Death, Heaven and Hell.

4.Belief in the Divine Decree or Predestination, its good and its bad.

So worship and obey Allâah by doing righteous deeds sincerely for Allâah only.

3. AdDeen of worship and obedience is for Allâah only.

Those who take Auliyâ’ (idols, lords, gods, intermediators) besides Him say:

"We worship them so that they may bring us near to Allâah."

Allâah will judge between them concerning their differences.

Allâah does NOT guide a Liar, and a disbeliever.

4. Had Allâah willed to take a son or offspring, He could have chosen whom He willed out of those whom He created.

Glory be to Him! He is above such things. He is Allâah, the One, the Irresistible.

39. Say: Mohamed, "O My people!

40. "To who comes a disgracing torment, and on who descends an everlasting torment."

41. We have sent down to Mohamed صلى الله عليه وسلم) AlQur’âan for Mankind in Truth.

So who ever accepts the guidance, it is only for his ownself, and who ever goes astray, he goes astray only for his loss.

You Mohamed صلى الله عليه وسلم are not a Wakîl ( disposer of affairs, judge) over them.[1]

[1]

a) It is obligatory to have Belief in the Messengership of the Prophet Mohamed صلى الله عليه وسلم. Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: Allâah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"By Allâah, in Whose Hand Mohamed's soul is, there is none from among the Jews and the Christians and others, who hear about me and then dies without believing in the Message with which I have been sent of Islâamic Monotheism, but he will be from the dwellers of the Fire."
(Sahih Muslim , the Book of Faith, Vol.1, Hadith No.240).

b) The asking of Jibraeel (Gabriel) from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم about Belief, AlIslâam, Ihsân (perfection) and the knowledge of the Hour (Resurrection), and their explanation given to him by the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.

Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said to his companions:

"Jibraeel (Gabriel) عليه السلام came to teach you your Faith."

So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم regarded all that Deen. And all that which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم explained to the delegation of ‘AbdűlQais was a part of faith.
(See Sahih AlBukhâri, Vol.1, Hadîth No.50 and 87)

And the Statement of Allâah عز وجل : "Who ever seeks a Faith other than AlIslaam, it will never be accepted of him." (3:85).

Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه :

One day while the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was sitting in the company of some people, Jibraeel (Gabriel) عليه السلام came and asked,

"What is Faith?"

Allâah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم replied,

"Faith is to believe in Allâah, His angels, the meeting with Him, His messengers, and to believe in Resurrection."

* Then he further asked, "What is AlIslâam?"

Allâah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم replied,

"To worship Allâah Alone and none else, to perform AsSalât (Iqamât-AsSalât), to give the Zakât and to observe Saum (fasts) during the month of Ramadhâan,"

** then he further asked,

"What is Ihsân (perfection)?" Allâah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم replied,

"To worship Allâah عز وجل as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you."

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم then recited:

"The knowledge of the Hour is with Allâah (Alone)." (31:34).

Then Jibraeel عليه السلام left and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم asked his Companions to call him back, but they could not see him.

Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "That was Jibraeel عليه السلام who came to teach the people their Faith."

Abu ‘Abdullâh رضي الله عنه said:

He (the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) considered all that as a part of faith. (Sahih AlBukhâri, Vol.1, Hadîth No.47).

*In this Hadîth, only 4 articles are mentioned, while in another Hadîth, 6 articles are mentioned:

(i) Allâah;
(ii) His Angels;
(iii) His Books AtTaurat, AlInjeel, AlQur’âan and all the other Holy Books revealed by Allâah;
(iv) His Messengers,
(v) Day of Resurrection and
(vi) AlQadar (Divine Pre-Ordainments), what ever Allâah has ordained, must come to pass.

**Again the principles of AlIslâam mentioned here are 4, but in other narrations, they are 5 - 5th is the pilgrimage (Hajj ) to Makkah for the one who can afford it once in a lifetime.

[2] (V.40:78)
There are many Prophets and Messengers of Allâah.

About twenty-five of them are mentioned in AlQur’aan;

out of these twenty-five, only five are of strong will, namely:

Mohamed صلى الله عليه وسلم, Nűh, Ibrâhîm, Műsâ, and ‘ÎsâibnMaryam عليهم السلام .

Robert,

Is this definition truth to form of the Belief in Islam means ?

I tried to give a better understanding to English language people because Allaah Says;

Sűrat Al-Kâfirűn
(The Non Believers) CIX

In the Name of Allâah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

O you NON Believers

I do not serve what you serve

Nor are you servers of what I serve

Nor will I be a server of what you serve

Nor will you be servers of what I serve

FOR you IS your way of life, and for me is my way of Life.

Brother Deacon Gray, great post. As we can see, faith affects every aspect of our lives. Case in point when I am traveling to and from the various places I need to go educating people about the importance of holistic health, I get in the car and drive on faith hoping that I will arrive to my destination safe and on time. Also when I enroll my children in school, I put my children in their care having faith that the teachers and adults who are teaching my children are responsible, are knowledgeable in the way of teaching and have a drive for order. An important point, though, is that faith is only as good as the object in which it is placed.

Ms. Juanita,
Don’t you have enough sense to see the issue is about spiritual faith; having to do with God? This kind of faith has not to do with driving your car.
I believe what I say because it is true. I can not believe anything that is not true or at the least plausible!

Sister Juanita,

That was a great case and point and you brought it home with me when you understood that faith effect our health. I am reminded all the time about putting healthy things and thinking in your body and you will get healthy things from your body.

Let us keep the lines of communication open for those of us who may not know, when you spirit is healthy, you are healthy.

Mr. Deacon,

By the same token; if the spirit is dumb the person is dumb as well!

So, you haven’t said anything knucklehead!

HARRY

Stay on topic, we are talking about Faith, GOT IT!!!

Harry Watley Monday, December 29th 2014 at 11:33AM

To all,
I am not going to argue with you all because you understand me very well and you all don’t wall me to be our savior! That is what the real problem is, but I love all of us!
