I hope she doesn't go down for abuse. This is called discipline. I commend her for reprimanding her child. They may not believe in her method of punishment, but she very well could have saved his life. She has to protect her own, no one else will. I wish her well. He will appreciate this later in life. Now, I see two types of protesting the death of Brother Freddie Gray while in the care of Baltimore’s Police Department. There was the majority protestors who was peacefully exercising their First Amendment Rights. Also there was a small amount of our youth, with mask and hoodies on hoping not to be identified, throwing rocks at the police, looting, burning and taking advantage by causing confusion and mayhem during what have been a peaceful demonstration protesting the death of Brother Freddie Gray.

Sister Jeni Fa, all my life I have witness that power of a Black Mother and her son or her children, which to this day, I still don’t understand. This is an awesome power that God has given that connection, that power, that gift between a mother and her children and as a man and as a father, I will have to leave it here because I will never understand that gift of The Most High.

The Mother, Sister Toya Graham saw and recognized her son Michael, with a black mask and a hoody on walking across the street from a group of rock throwing youth, when she looked into his eyes and recognized him as her son, she went off.

That may well have been planned to happen by God to play out, not just for young Michael but to help cool down the ones who would take advantage of this mainly peaceful protest. I think that Sister Toya Graham was right because to this day, there is no reports that young Michael was arrested or killed and believe it or not may have played a very important role in bringing peace to The City of Baltimore God bless Sister Toya Graham for demonstrating her love in public for her son Michael.

Time will tell... Perhaps, she saved him that day, but she can't protect him from life or the Black male experience. He's young and still under her thumb, but he'll soon become of age. As a mother of a preadolescent boy, I believe its important for mothers to encourage them rather than hinder them and allow them to express themselves in a society that works early in their lives to silence their voices. To each his/her own... I don't applaud what she did; however, she did what she knew to do. Hopefully she can learn from this experience by talking with her child to find out why he went out there in the first place. Boys have to be allowed to become men and for him to go out there, shows that he however misguided had strong feelings about police brutality.

That slap up side Michae's head may have been that slap that have saved is LIFE.

That slap that was heard throughout Baltimore may have needed to bring Baltimore to peace, that lifted the curfew, that sent the national guard home.

The term "Meritorious Manumission" is a term that I have not heard anyone use in years and I for one would be interested to see how you develop the use of this term. Brother SoSo, I know that you are going somewhere by using this term, so please take your time and dedicate a blog to the use and the meaning of the term "Meritorious Manumission Laws.

I don't think this mother should've hit him on the head like that but I feel her though. She's his mom, she gave birth to him, and if she feels he should be disciplined in public to get her point across then so be it. She said she told him not to go down in the area where the protesting was going to be, but he disobeyed her and did what he wanted. So I'm sure she wasn't thinking about hitting him on national television, she was trying to save her son. He was obviously following the crowd, and she said he knew better. She doesn't want to see her son dead at the hands of law enforcement or incarcerated.

At the same time, our youth (black males in particular) should be given life lessons on how to conduct themselves when approached by law enforcement or those in authority. When our sons reached adolescence, my husband and I gave each one of our sons advice on how to deal with the police, how to conduct themselves if they are ever stopped or pulled over and gave them a list of DOs and DON'Ts when being approached and questioned by one, because as lifelong residents and parents rearing Black children in Southern Tennessee we understood that Black men were public enemy number one in the eyes of American society, and cops like to beat and kill Black men so my husband and I gave them tips on how to survive any encounter with them. They have the legal authority to detain and question you. If you disagree, just deal with it later in court.

i am a mother of 3 kids, i have a son who is in his 20s and he's my only son, and believe me i would rather whip his ass then have the police kill him, they around here killing off black men left and right like it's a video game, while he's throwing rocks at the police, if the police reacted and did something to her son then what, she had every right to do him like that, and for those of you saying 'there are better ways to parent, it's called good communications skills, plain ole talking,' i believe in 'spare the rod, spoil the child,' and that's how the black community used to be as a whole, if someone saw your child doing wrong someone would discipline your child, then the child got another ass whipping from you when they got home, see some of the police brutality is our fault too, back then people cared about others kids even if their parents weren't around to set them straight, but now things have changed and look at what that change has brought, today many of these kids out here today are unruly and lack proper discipline and their parents are afraid to give their children an ass whipping, if only more parents disciplined their children like this mother did and instill in their children obedience and a respect for authority, perhaps the police wouldn't have to do it for us

what toya graham did to her son did get results as her son did stop throwing rocks at the police, i'm not saying anything that you all don't already know though, this world has gone to hell and has become a breeding ground for the raising of spoiled undisciplined children, i remember when i instructed my youngest daughter who was 9 years old at the time to wash the dishes, and her way of washing the dishes was to break them off, so i sat her down at the kitchen table, let her know that type of behavior will not be tolerated, after i talked to her she continued to break the dishes off, so i got the belt and whipped her behind right there on the spot, needless to say she stopped breaking the dishes and washed the dishes the way she was supposed to wash them, and there was no more spanking after that,

even though i am a divorced parent who raised my 3 children in the hood, they have not become statistics, now understand me well, i am not for abuse of children at all, however whipping that ass when needed, i support that 100 percent

Sister Kim, you are so on point with those statements! Parents were forces to be reckoned with back in the day. I have 2 siblings and I'm the oldest child in my family, and to this day everyone who knows my family will tell you that nobody had more reared, studious children than Mr. and Mrs. Muhammad. All of us turned out fine, and none of us have never been in trouble with the law, not even for so much as a traffic violation.

My friend and I were speaking about this the other day and just saying to ourselves how times have changed from when we were up and coming, and how the teachers had permission to whip our behinds if we came to school late, or if we acted up and was disorderly in school. Then you got another behind whipping when you got home...LOL

This was many, many years ago and now the power is being taken from the parents and into the hands of goverment agencies. I used to believe in "boundaries" for parents when it came to disciplining thier children....and I still do...but the boundaries have expanded a bit as I've gotten older and realized how unruly some children are in this day and time.

Over here in the South, I go into the supermarkets today and look at all these little bad children running around. They are some of the most unruly and disobedient I've seen. They go from grocery aisle to grocery aisle and throw produce and other items on the floor like they have absolutely no discipline. Their parents rarely (if ever) spank them....and if they do hit them it's usually out of anger and frustration rather than for disciplinary purposes. And today's children are amazingly strong.....stronger than what we were back in the day.

Their parents let them go undisciplined and when they get older they grow up and join gangs and the police end up locking them up in jail or shooting them dead out-right because they are so undisciplined that tasers and pepper-spray don't work on them. They look at being and acting crazy as a badge of honor.

I agree with discipline/not abuse, but certainly discipline. The American society has been so lax in that. When there is no discipline, there is no LOVE. When they take the ability to discipline a child away from the parent, then they really may as well just take over responsiblity for that child.
