Boy, 6, fatally shoots toddler brother while playing ‘cops and robbers,’ dad arrested

He was a former gang member who had snitched on his old crew and now feared for his life. So Santiago purchased a pistol on the street and kept it in the kitchen just in case.

Whether he needed to show his 6-year-old son the weapon, however, is something that will likely haunt Santiago for the rest of his life.

On Saturday night, Santiago’s security scheme went horribly wrong when his son found the loaded gun. The boy, who has not been named by police, then began playing “cops and robbers” with his younger brother, 3-year-old Eian, when the gun suddenly went off.

The bullet struck Eian in the face, killing him.

This is another reason why gun reform is needed. This could be your child or grand child.

Is that the little boy that died in the pic? Awh my heart breaks....

LHM!

Jeni Fa Tuesday, October 20th 2015 at 10:10AM

This is why we need gun education the more... people need to know how to store, handle, use guns safely. Its obvious that people aren't going to stop buying guns and that the NRA isn't going to stop making and selling them so we have to have some concessions on the table that are realistic.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, October 20th 2015 at 11:05AM

I think that a background check, training of 20 hours, lock technology should be put on all guns to prevent the theft or misuse in this case and insurance should be mandatory for a gun licensed. People like this should have some respect for their weapon and not just leave there weapon around, so that their children can find and use it.

This should be a lesson to all who have guns, now this Father is setting in JAIL.

Jeni Fa Wednesday, October 21st 2015 at 7:56PM

..."This should be a lesson to all who have guns, now this Father is setting in JAIL."...

It should be, but I doubt it.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, October 21st 2015 at 9:27PM

This is madness and the people must come together over this.

Siebra Muhammad Thursday, October 22nd 2015 at 6:04PM

This is sad all around, but hiding a gun atop of a refrigerator is not really "hiding" it. With children that age and who have a big amount of curiosity at that age, the boy's father really should've gotten a gun safe, or at least store it in a place that only he knows about and where young children cannot get easy access to it. How sad...

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, October 23rd 2015 at 10:58AM

The sad thing about this is, that this scenario is playing out at a average of one kid shooting a week all over this country this year alone.

Some people say that we don't have a gun problem and find it easy to blame it on the Mentally Ill.

Steve Williams Friday, October 23rd 2015 at 11:53AM

I had a semi-auto pistol and kept it with an empty chamber and a loaded magazine in a separate location. That also meant the slide had to be pulled back to chamber a round, which little hands can't do. Jen, the NRA doesn't make or sell guns.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, October 23rd 2015 at 12:08PM

This article mentioned that Santiagos said this:Santiago thought the refrigerator was too tall for his children to reach the handgun, Rayyan said: “He said in his eyes, that was the best spot, on the back of the fridge, because the kids couldn’t find it.”

Did you notice he said handgun and not a semi-auto pisto. Now Steven, you are entitled to your own belief's but not your own FATS. Stay with the FACTS in this case Steven.

Steve Williams Friday, October 23rd 2015 at 1:02PM

I wasn't commenting on the article. I was commenting on your solution.

Steve Williams Friday, October 23rd 2015 at 1:07PM

And Ron, the article says pistol. You should know that means semi-auto. A revolver and a pistol are two different types of handgun.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, October 23rd 2015 at 8:46PM

See, this is the reason why training is needed before people put there hands on a weapon or firearm. In training you will learn that a handgun is a noun for 1.a gun designed for use by one hand, especially a pistol or revolver.

The synonyms: pistol · revolver · gun · sidearm · six-shooter · .38 · derringer · piece · Saturday night special · rod · roscoe · Colt

Now in the case if the gun suddenly went off, if it was a pistol, this weapon was already cocked, and ready to fire anyway. If this young man would have learned more about his weapon, his son 3-year-old Eian would still be alive and Michael Santiago would not be setting in jail.

What a loss, don't you have any feeling for that. Gun in a untrained hand, KILLS.

Jeni Fa Saturday, October 24th 2015 at 9:50AM

@ Steve,

..."Jen, the NRA doesn't make or sell guns."...

Although I can appreciate that... they are gun advocates and an association for gun; therefore, they have a vested interest in them. I'm sure some of the lobbying monies can be diverted to schools for gun safety education. Don't you think?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, October 27th 2015 at 4:10PM

The people that is on broad of directors of the NRA do make and sell arms.

Jeni Fa Sunday, November 1st 2015 at 3:21PM

@ Deac,

Steve thinks the Government is going to take his guns away! ~Ha!

Steve Williams Sunday, November 1st 2015 at 7:46PM

The National Rifle Association claims to speak for more than 4 million gun owners. But the shots are really called by a hush-hush group of 76 directors. The majority are nominated via a top-down process and elected by a small fraction of NRA members. A breakdown of the current board, based on their official bios:

87 percent are men. 93 percent are white.
25 percent are current or former federal, state, or local lawmakers or officials.
22 percent are current or former law enforcement officers. 30 percent are current or former members of the military.
24 percent are lawyers.
12 percent are entertainers or athletes.
64 percent are hunters. 71 percent are sport or competitive shooters.
At least 71 percent were nominated, endorsed, or selected by the NRA's Nominating Committee.
Some notable members of the NRA's current board of directors:

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Sunday, November 1st 2015 at 11:54PM

What about that baby shooting his brother because the father did not go through any training and was careless with his weapon?

This is happening on a regular bases. Do you think that their is a problem with guns in this country?

Jeni Fa Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 1:04AM

@Steve,

..."The club has a 40 shot walkabout archery course with practice targets open year round for club archers. This same course is set up with 3D targets 4 or more weekends a year and open to the public with a daily fee to shoot."...

Now that sounds like fun!

Deac, the web link also has home safety course!

..."Basic Pistol & Personal Protection Inside the Home course (P.P.I.T.H) - Open to the Public - This course will develop your basic knowledge, skills and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and provide information on the law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense. Steve Williams Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 8:01AM

Jen, yes we are big on safety. I will take the basic course myself, even though I've been through it many times it the past 40+ years. There are two more courses, intermediate and advanced, but everyone needs to go through basic first. I'll also be taking the Range Master Certification. I also volunteered to help with the youth programs, since I've trained my own sons and many of their friends too. I will need to be NRA certified myself to do that.

Steve Williams Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 8:53AM

Ron, there are more and more legalities all the time, but yet you perceive the 'gun problem' is getting worse. I'll just tell you about one of these legalities. Buying this new pistol was not my last hurdle by any means. I have two handguns in California, and to get those sent to me in Pennsylvania my son needs to have them shipped from a licensed dealer there to a licensed dealer here. The store where I just bought a gun won't do that, they won't deal with California because of the requirements added to this simple transaction, like needing to get a special permit for each individual transaction. So I'll have to ask around at other dealers to see if I can find one that will do it. You may call that "no one is trying to take your guns Steve". What I call it is holding my guns hostage in California amounts to the same thing.

Jeni Fa Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 9:21AM

@ Steve,

What kind of gun would you recommend for a lady and first time gun owner to be trained to use? Maybe I can stop being afraid of guns and learn more about the safety and use of them; also what I'm advocating for be added to school ed curriculum.

Steve Williams Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 9:45AM

Jen,

The gun I just bought, the Ruger SR22, would be a great gun for your purposes.

http://www.ruger.com/products/sr22Pistol/

Steve Williams Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 9:47AM

It comes with a lock too. No child will be able to use it.

Steve Williams Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 10:03AM

Jen, I was about 8 or 10 when I shot my first .22 at YMCA summer camp on the upper Chesapeake. They were single shot rifles, safety first.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 10:51AM

I think you feel that there is no gun problem in American. Please take the time: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/gu...

and read this one. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/go...

Steve Williams Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 10:57AM

What I think Ron is there's a gun control problem in this country. You seem to ignore the benefit of education.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 11:23AM

STEVEN, Education about how to register, insure, use, clean, and store your weapon. By closing the gun show loopholes diminish the risk of some gang member putting there hands on a gun and better yet, his 6 year old son, shooting his brother dead.

That is the problem that I am highlighting, that is happening to much all over this country.

Steve Williams Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 1:45PM

And who provides the education? The NRA.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 4:32PM

In the state in which the gun license is applied.

Steve Williams Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 5:49PM

The NRA is in every state.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 6:58PM

State government and not some NRA.

Steve Williams Monday, November 2nd 2015 at 11:49PM

What state government is qualified to offer firearms education?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, November 3rd 2015 at 7:56AM

Don't you think the individual states can handle that task? don't you think the individual states can handle that text

Steve Williams Tuesday, November 3rd 2015 at 8:01AM

No.

Steve Williams Tuesday, November 3rd 2015 at 8:09AM

Because the government doesn't have an interest in guns. The NRA members like myself do. I went and shot a 50 ft. pistol course last night, 30 rounds each at slow, timed and rapid fire. Here's the NRA pistol rules:
http://compete.nra.org/documents/pdf/compe...

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, November 3rd 2015 at 9:31AM

Each state is concern about lowering the crime rate so, state government can do this.

Steve Williams Tuesday, November 3rd 2015 at 9:49AM

If you say so.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, November 3rd 2015 at 10:53AM

This I know.

Jeni Fa Tuesday, November 3rd 2015 at 11:19AM

@
..."Don't you think the individual states can handle that task? don't you think the individual states can handle that,"...

I have to say I agree with Steve. The govt can't handle gun ed. I believe the NRA could do a better job!

Jeni Fa Tuesday, November 3rd 2015 at 11:26AM

@ Steve,

That gun isn't aesthetically appealing to my eye. I'm thinking silver or chrome colored with a smaller handle like the kind women used on Columbo or Murder She Wrote! Ha!

Steve Williams Tuesday, November 3rd 2015 at 2:04PM

Jen, you can get a nice lavender, or silver. There are interchangeble grips, I left the slimmer ones on. There are interchangeable baseplates on the magazines, I switched out the larger for the smaller. Even if you have small hands I think that combo would work for you.

Steve Williams Tuesday, November 3rd 2015 at 2:17PM

Just like you see here.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, November 3rd 2015 at 5:25PM

Guns killed more Americans in 12 years than AIDS, all the wars, and illegal drug overdoses combined and don't nobody give a damn. The NRA don't give a damn, the gun lovers don't give a damn, some state and local politicians don't give a damn. This lost of life will continue as the profits roll in.

Who knows maybe someone you love might grab your intention, like it did to the father of a six year old child.

Steve Williams Wednesday, November 4th 2015 at 8:25AM

I've already experienced incidents with family.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, November 4th 2015 at 9:29AM

We are talking about boots on the ground in the middle east as a war goes on here in The United States, profits for guns is at a all time high the death rate goes unchecked here in America and many still think that we don't have a gun problem in this country

Let us band together to keep the guns out of the unqualified hands.

Steve Williams Wednesday, November 4th 2015 at 9:40AM

The only way you can do that is to eliminate guns entirely. An outright ban and confiscation.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, November 4th 2015 at 10:15AM

think this can be done voluntarily closing the gun show loopholes,, background checks and with a buy back program state by state across the nation.

Steve Williams Wednesday, November 4th 2015 at 12:46PM

That's not enough Ron. You can only stop it by making all guns illegal.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, November 4th 2015 at 1:23PM

What would you do?

Steve Williams Wednesday, November 4th 2015 at 2:13PM

You tell me. My sons had a very close friend, someone my wife and I regarded as a son almost. When we were attending my middle son's marriage he was watching the house and animals for us. Instead he took my other son's car, went and got some crank, went out shooting a .22 rifle with a rival for a girl, and shot the guy in the head with that guy's own rifle, intentionally. Jared knew all about guns, no lack of training.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, November 4th 2015 at 2:23PM

That is eat Steve but what about this case of a 6 year old shooting his brother, more and more of these types of cases are popping all over the nation. So, what who you do about that?

Steve Williams Wednesday, November 4th 2015 at 4:37PM

You tell me Ron. My oldest son almost had his head shot off with a 12 guage when he was 16, and my second wife did have about 75% of her hands shot off with a 12 guage 16 years ago.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, November 4th 2015 at 6:33PM

Delay that last Steve, that was a type "O" on my part.

Between your son and your wife, I see that you are a bless man to still have both of them.

Steve Williams Thursday, November 5th 2015 at 4:15AM

Yes I am Ron. The incident with my son happened over at one of his friends, who with his little brother were unsupervised every day after school because both parents worked. For a parent to leave a loaded shotgun in a house with unsupervised kids really was stupid. My son did know about guns and the little brother I guess heeded his warning and raised the muzzle before the gun went off.

Steve Williams Thursday, November 5th 2015 at 4:34AM

The man who shot my wife got 18 years for mayhem. He's out of prison now, not exactly reassuring for the victim.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Thursday, November 5th 2015 at 6:49AM

Our prayers is with you and yours Steve.

Steve Williams Thursday, November 5th 2015 at 7:38AM

Thanks Ron, same to you.

Jeni Fa Friday, November 6th 2015 at 9:08AM

@ Steve,

..."My son did know about guns and the little brother I guess heeded his warning and raised the muzzle before the gun went off."...

This is a good reason to have gun safety and education on the proper handling and use of guns. Thank goodness your son was educated about guns!

Also the Ruger in the video is still more masculine other than the color... I wouldn't do a color gun because it makes it look fun and like a toy. Definitely silver, but not the Ruger.

Steve Williams Friday, November 6th 2015 at 9:44AM

Walther makes a comparable model. My other son's wife has one of those, I'll get you the info.

Steve Williams Friday, November 6th 2015 at 9:58AM

My son also has a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard .380 he really likes, but .380 is more expensive to shoot than .22

Steve Williams Friday, November 6th 2015 at 10:02AM

http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/sto...

Jeni Fa Saturday, November 7th 2015 at 7:54PM

Actually that model is fine! I saw some others... See below. I didn't realize that handbags are being made to carry them ( guns )!
