WASHINGTON — President Obama used a Veterans Day address at Arlington National Cemetery Wednesday to defend his administration's progress on veterans issues and to ask American employers to do their part to help.

"My message is simple: If you want to get the job done, hire a vet," Obama said. "They’re ready to serve and they'll make you proud."

The president's remarks followed a solemn ceremony at which he laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Obama saluted the "unbroken chain of patriots who have served this country with honor" throughout American history. "Our tributes today will ring hollow if we do not ensure that veterans receive the care that you have earned and you deserve," he said.

He claimed progress on preventing homelessness by veterans, reducing the backlog of disability claims and recognizing more returning troops with post traumatic stress disorder.
