FORT MILL, S.C. — Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has taken a sharp dive in recent national polls, another substantial setback for the retired neurosurgeon's campaign that comes amid ongoing scrutiny over his grasp of foreign policy issues.

Carson support fell seven percentage points in just one month, according to a survey released by Quinnipiac University on Wednesday morning. Once the strongest challenger against GOP front-runner Donald Trump, Carson is now tied for third place with Sen. Ted Cruz (Tex.), each taking 16 percent support.

In a November poll by Quinnipiac, Carson was virtually tied with Trump at 23 percent to Trump's 24 percent. Now Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) has surged to second place, taking 17 percent support against Trump's 27 percent.
