Then, on Monday, a Post reporter publicly queried multiple veterans groups on Twitter, asking whether they had received personal donations from Trump.
Donald Trump can't stop lying to America's veterans.
Trump tweeted Monday, "amazingly, with all of the money I have raised for the vets, I have got nothing but bad publicity from the dishonest and disgusting media".
Trump on Tuesday blasted detractors for questioning the legitimacy of his philanthropy, adding that news coverage of his actions remains unfair.
The Washington Post reported on Friday night that only $3.1 million of the $5 million raised can be accounted for four months later.
"Later Monday evening, Trump called the home of James K. Kallstrom, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation official who is chairman of the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation". Some of the veterans groups chosen did not meet certain criteria, according to Trump. She said a list of organizations was posted on the campaign website, but there was no such list available.
Trump explained that waiting for donations wasn't the only reason for the delay in reporting.
At the time, the Trump campaign claimed that the event had netted $5 million, in addition to $1 million donated by the billionaire businessman himself, bringing the total to "more than" $6 million. "Some of them came through very late".
