Curfew Takes Effect in Charlotte After Hours of Peaceful Protests
by Phil Helsel
A curfew went into effect in Charlotte Friday after a night of largely peaceful protests following two nights of violence, but police were not immediately enforcing it.
Crowds continued marching after the order took effect at midnight, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Capt. Mike Campagna said officers don't plan to enforce the curfew if protests remain peaceful.
Protests have been held in Charlotte each night since Tuesday, when police fatally shot an African-American man, Keith Lamont Scott, while looking for another person. Police have said Scott was armed. Scott's family have doubted that claim.
The worst violence was Wednesday, when windows were smashed, a person was fatally shot in what officials called a "civilian-on-civilian" incident, more than 40 people were arrested and four officers and nine civilians were injured.
