WASHINGTON — When Special Agent Adrian Hawkins of the Federal Bureau of Investigation called the Democratic National Committee in September 2015 to pass along some troubling news about its computer network, he was transferred, naturally, to the help desk.

His message was brief, if alarming. At least one computer system belonging to the D.N.C. had been compromised by hackers federal investigators had named “the Dukes,” a cyberespionage team linked to the Russian government.

The F.B.I. knew it well: The bureau had spent the last few years trying to kick the Dukes out of the unclassified email systems of the White House, the State Department and even the Joint Chiefs of Staff, one of the government’s best-protected networks.

Yared Tamene, the tech-support contractor at the D.N.C. who fielded the call, was no expert in cyberattacks. His first moves were to check Google for “the Dukes” and conduct a cursory search of the D.N.C. computer system logs to look for hints of such a cyberintrusion.

By his own account, he did not look too hard even after Special Agent Hawkins called back repeatedly over the next several weeks — in part because he wasn’t certain the caller was a real F.B.I. agent and not an impostor.

What's your point Ron? That the DNC was stupid?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, December 14th 2016 at 5:05PM

Did you read the article Steven?

Steve Williams Wednesday, December 14th 2016 at 5:36PM

I read your headline Ron, and your brief expose of a clueless DNC staffer. What did I miss?

Steve Williams Wednesday, December 14th 2016 at 5:40PM

YOU ALL HAVE BEEN TRYING TO EXCUSE YOUR INCOMPETENCE FOR 21 MONTHS. WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?

Steve Williams Wednesday, December 14th 2016 at 5:49PM

The racists did it, the Russians did it, the electoral map did it, fake news did it... Blah, blah, blah.

Steve Williams Wednesday, December 14th 2016 at 5:52PM

Oh I forgot, the FBI did it.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, December 14th 2016 at 6:27PM

I read your headline Ron, and your brief expose of a clueless DNC staffer. What did I miss? And you still did not get it, Hey Steven, try clicking on the link for the rest of the story, OK!

Today we release a new whitepaper on an APT group commonly referred to as “the Dukes”. We believe that the Dukes are a well-resourced, highly dedicated, and organized cyber-espionage group that has been working for the Russian government since at least 2008 to collect intelligence in support of foreign and security policy decision-making.

The Dukes (sometimes also referred to as APT29) are known to employ a wide arsenal of malware toolsets including MiniDuke, CosmicDuke, OnionDuke, CozyDuke, SeaDuke, CloudDuke (aka MiniDionis), and HammerDuke (aka HAMMERTOSS [PDF]).

Despite the extensive technical research by us and others into many of the toolsets of the Dukes, we felt that we were still missing crucial parts of the story. Meanwhile, others had envisioned how the story might look, but had concluded that “it is difficult to lead the defense against that which one is not aware of or does not comprehend.” (Maldre, 2015)

By George!!! I think You Got It!!!!

They are HERE....

Are you comfortable with that?

Steve Williams Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 7:43AM

Did you read the whitepaper Ron? BTW, the CIA refuses to brief the House Intelligence Committee today.

Just scan it Ron and see the types of organizations targeted.

Steve Williams Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 7:59AM

What do you think would have been a more valuable target, the DNC, or clintonemail.com? Duh.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 1:19PM

The Perfect Weapon: How Russian Cyberpower Invaded the U.S.

Steven, I asked you a question: "Are you comfortable with that? "

Steve Williams Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 1:56PM

It wasn't the Russians that was Assange's source. Ron, espionage is a fact of life. What kind of a question is "are yo comfortable with that?" That is a question that is totally irrelevant to Trump's landslide win.

Steve Williams Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 2:07PM

Julian Assange is the real hero in all this, and Hillary is the villain that gave the nation's secrets to Russia and a host of other nations. Fortunately there were patriots who stepped up and prevented her from doing so AGAIN as President!

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 2:08PM

Steven, I asked you a question: "Are you comfortable with that? " don't twist my words, Steven.

Are you comfortable with the Russian hacking?

Steve Williams Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 4:01PM

No Ron, I'm not "comfortable" with Russian hacking. But I'm MUCH less comfortable with a presidential candidate that had no clue how to protect state secrets from them!

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 4:51PM

I agree and I trouble with a presidential candidate that won't admit that these hacks happen.

Steve Williams Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 6:04PM

Ron, I know you are not talking about Hillary but I am. Let me explain AGAIN. I started in electronics and programming in 1978. In 1983 I started working in computer/telephony networks. From then until 1992 our focus was on developing basic network functionality but as we got that up and running, network security became more and more of a concern. From that time I also worked on network security. At the time I retired in 2004 I was a full time network security professional. When the Clinton email story broke I had only ONE question, and that was, was her server SECURE. So I find this current CRISIS of cyber election manipulation EXTREMELY AMUSING.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 7:03PM

Steven, this blog was not about Hillary or her E-mails. This story makes that subject pale in comparison, stay focused on the subject of: "The Perfect Weapon: How Russian Cyberpower Invaded the U.S."

I am talking about Donald and his willingness to jump on the defense of Putin, then support the finding of the CIA which uncovered this plot of How Russian Cyberpower Invaded the U.S. this news should rock the very foundation we as American's believe in, FREE AND TROUBLE FREEELECTIONS. This is no AMUSING matter, this is serious.

Steve Williams Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 8:12PM

That's because you take fake news seriously Ron.

Steve Williams Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 8:14PM

It's always been about Secretary Clinton's UNSECURED email server.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 8:53PM

FAKE NEWS IS SOMETHING THAT HAS NO TRUTH OR EVIDENCE BEHIND IT STEVEN, YOU KNOW THAT...

It's always been about Secretary Clinton's UNSECURED email server.

You know that you have lost your argument when you use this weak as diversionary tactic, it is about How Russian Cyberpower Invaded the U.S. and how Donald is kissing Putin as, while he throws the CIA and all those who are sacrificing their lives to bring intelligence to The White House.

Don't you get it STEVEN, these chain of events are much, much more serious then Clinton's E-mails that have been investigated some 9 times by republican FACT finding teams, including THE FBI and they found that Clinton did nothing WRONG.

WOW!!!!!

GROW UP AND GET OVER IT.

Steve Williams Thursday, December 15th 2016 at 11:53PM

You are wrong Ron, but I really don't care if you see it or not. As Michael Steel said tonight to Joy Reid, it's time to accept that Trump is in the driver's seat.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, December 16th 2016 at 7:46AM

So, you don't want to get to the bottom of this Cyber attack on the U.S. because your boy benefited by it, I got it!!!

Steve Williams Friday, December 16th 2016 at 9:08AM

No Ron, you don't get it. There's no excuse for our poor performance on cyber security, and that is one more thing Trump will fix.

Steve Williams Friday, December 16th 2016 at 9:16AM

And that is the biggest reason I wouldn't vote for Hillary, because she couldn't secure her own system, much less the nation's.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, December 16th 2016 at 9:43AM

At this point Steven, Donald is in denial, he is still campaigning.

Steve Williams Friday, December 16th 2016 at 10:30AM

Upgrading cyber security is one of his campaign promises. I believe he can do it.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, December 16th 2016 at 11:16AM

That man is in denial about the hold Cyber attack on the U.S. because he was the one to invite this attack on these shores, that should trouble us all.

Steve Williams Friday, December 16th 2016 at 12:39PM

You be troubled Ron, I'm not.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, December 16th 2016 at 12:49PM

Explain...

Steve Williams Friday, December 16th 2016 at 4:32PM

You said it should trouble everyone Ron but it doesn't trouble me. It is all just noise.

Steve Williams Friday, December 16th 2016 at 4:33PM

We had 18 months of noise and enough is enough.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, December 16th 2016 at 5:08PM

You said it should trouble everyone Ron but it doesn't trouble me.

What are you not trouble of Steven?

What is all NOISE Steven?

What has been going on for 18 months, that you find is NOISE Steven?

Steve Williams Friday, December 16th 2016 at 5:38PM

I'm not troubled about Trump "inviting an attack on these shores."

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Friday, December 16th 2016 at 6:35PM

Why not?

Steve Williams Saturday, December 17th 2016 at 12:48AM

Fake news doesn't trouble me Ron. I heard what Trump said and it wasn't what you said.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Saturday, December 17th 2016 at 8:28AM

What has been going on for 18 months, that you find is NOISE Steven?

Back to FAKE NEWS as your fall back again. Aren't you to same person who could not prove what Donald's tweets, about millions of illegal voters?

YOUR WORDS: I heard what Trump said and it wasn't what you said.

What did you hear Steven?

Steve Williams Saturday, December 17th 2016 at 11:29AM

What he said was “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing."

An example of NOISE and FAKE NEWS is what the New York Times said about it. "Donald J. Trump said on Wednesday that he hoped Russian intelligence services had successfully hacked Hillary Clinton’s email, and encouraged them to publish whatever they may have stolen, essentially urging a foreign adversary to conduct cyberespionage against a former secretary of state."
