Honoring King’s Dream
The nation remembers the life and important work of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that all people would one day be treated as equals. Born in 1929, King lived in a time when unfair laws in Southern states segregated, or separated, African Americans from whites.


Inspired by the Indian leader Mohandas Gandhi, King used peaceful methods to work toward achieving his dream. On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The speech was delivered during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. That event is now remembered as one of the most important symbols of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. It was held to protest racial discrimination and to demand civil rights laws in Congress.
