"Moving forward, we will not continue to use the Let Girls Learn brand or maintain a stand-alone program," an email from Peace Corps acting director Sheila Crowley to employees reportedly reads.

The Trump administration gave order to cease the program's operation immediately, according to an internal document obtained by CNN.

Aspects of 'Let Girls Learn' will continue, although the brand name of the program will no longer be used.

The Obamas started the program in 2015. It aimed to increase educational opportunities for young girls in developing countries.

"'Let Girls Learn' provided a platform to showcase Peace Corps' strength in community development, shining a bright light on the work of our Volunteers all over the world," Crowley continued. "We are so proud of what 'Let Girls Learn' accomplished and we have all of you to thank for this success."

Steve Williams Thursday, May 4th 2017 at 8:19AM

I've yet to find out Ron. But I can tell you if Congress funded the program the executive office can't defund it.

"Moving forward, we will not continue to use the 'Let Girls Learn' brand or maintain a stand-alone program," read an email sent to Peace Corps employees this week by the agency's acting director Sheila Crowley.

In March 2015, the President and the First Lady launched Let Girls Learn, a U.S. government initiative aimed at helping adolescent girls attain a quality education that empowers them to reach their full potential. The recently released FY 2017 President’s Budget has requested more than $100 million in new funds for the initiative, building on the $250 million in funds requested in the FY 2016 President’s Budget to launch the initiative.

By the way Steven $250 million is nothing to the National debt, nothing.

Steve Williams Thursday, May 4th 2017 at 8:47AM

It's still FY 2017 Ron, and that funding is still there.

The White House's "Let Girls Learn" program, an initiative spearheaded by former first lady Michelle Obama, will continue, according to the Trump administration, CBS News' Kylie Atwood reports.

"There have been no changes to the Let Girls Learn program," a USAID official told Atwood. "The Administration supports policies and programs to empower adolescent girls, including efforts to educate them through the completion of secondary school."

The initiative has been a special focus of Michelle Obama, who in the past 18 months has promoted it with intensity. She pointed out that she has no budget for programs or authority to pass laws, but by raising awareness she has been able to make global girls’ education a priority of the federal government, establish partnerships with corporations and work with other developed countries, including Japan, Canada and Mexico.

Like other programs the Obama administration has launched, including “My Brother’s Keeper,” which focused on young black men in the United States, the new initiative hopes to attract private and nonprofit support. Resources from the United States Agency for International Development that already target adolescent girls will now be moved under the “Let Girls Learn” banner, and the Obama administration’s 2016 budget request includes an additional $250 million toward the effort.

GLOBAL STRATEGY TO EMPOWER ADOLESCENT GIRLS

Interesting: Why did Sheila Crowley, report, say these words: "Moving forward, we will not continue to use the 'Let Girls Learn' brand or maintain a standalone program," Sheila Crowley, the agency's acting director, wrote in an email to Peace Corps employees."

Steve Williams Thursday, May 4th 2017 at 11:05AM

If such a memo exists, I don't know why the acting director would have written it. The fact is the Let Girls Learn brand is still being used and the standalone program is being maintained.

Steve Williams Thursday, May 4th 2017 at 11:13AM

It sounds like more CNN Fake News.

"The "Let Girls Learn" program, which she and President Barack Obama started in 2015 to facilitate educational opportunities for adolescent girls in developing countries, will cease operation immediately, according to an internal document obtained by CNN."

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Thursday, May 4th 2017 at 11:42AM

I found the answer to my question.

Shortly after social media outrage began to spring up, the White House disputed the report that the initiative was being terminated. “There have been no changes to the program,” Kelly Love, a White House spokeswoman, told CNN.

But, the site notes, “the White House did not say whether Let Girls Learn would be maintained in the future as a standalone program — and they also did not directly address the memo or why it had been sent.”

This is the power of the press and the power of free speech here at work.

Absolutely not Ron. People need to think for themselves.
