The word "Islam" means peace. Or the full definition is "peace acquired by submitting one's will to Allah". That is the actual meaning of the word. That is why it is called a religion of peace, and the teachings of Islam are a guidance to peace.

I will say this, people get whatever they're looking for out of religion. If they're looking for an excuse for violence they'll find it, whether it's in Islam, Christianity, Judaism, etc. If they're looking for peace and way to better themselves, they'll find that too.

I don't care what anybody wants to call their religion as there are good and bad followers in all religions. I also don't buy the propaganda that it's Islam or all Muslims committing violent acts. So Islam is just as deserving of being called a religion of peace as much as Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, etc. It's all in how someone chooses to practice it.

Hirsi Ali believes the only way to stop FGM is to check at-risk girls. The reason why we as Muslims say Islam is a religion of peace is because the word Islam is derived from the word Salaam in Arabic, which means peace.

Half of my family is Christian and half is Muslim. My Muslim family members will tell you that Islam has rules for absolutely everything. And some of the rules actually involve coexisting with other religions. They're supposed to not only NOT harm, but protect people living in their countries who practice other religions. They have a tax, but that tax is equal to the amount that Muslims have to pay for charity. And they aren't supposed to attack people when not at war and they aren't supposed to kill themselves.

No verse in the entire Qur'an says to attack someone who does not attack you. Instead, it says that Muslims are to fight in self-defense, thus proving that Islam is peaceful and just.

As for Hell for disbelieving, we are told by the Allah through the teachings of Islam, that there is a purpose in life. Meaning that before you were human, you were in another spiritual state. You were asked if you wanted the reward of paradise. You replied yes. You were told that to do so you will enter this life as a human and your deeds will be tested. That you will struggle and strive. If you are good, you will get paradise. If you are bad, Hellfire. You agreed to the test. You could have said no and chose to be an angel or even an animal or a rock. But you chose to be human. When you were finally born, the memory of all of this is washed off. And the test of this life begins. Simply put, if going to Hell for disbelieving is the fault of the disbeliever for agreeing to that condition, thus showing Islam is just.

So it's not Islam that is the problem. It's the people who are using it to fulfill whatever purpose they have that involves hurting others. Which goes back to my original post that people will get out of religion what they are looking for. And those looking for something involving violence will find it whether they're looking for it in Christianity, Islam, or Judaism.

So, you have not seen any of these video reports, is that right Robert? If so, you have no understanding or wisdom of what is said in these two video reports. Now you are using terms as KNOW, CONVICTED CRIMINAL

of residence when originally applying for asylum. In her asylum application, she had claimed to be fleeing a forced marriage,

but the Zembla coverage featured interviews with her family, who denied that claim.

The program alleged that, contrary to Hirsi Ali's claims of having fled a Somali war zone, the MP had been living comfortably

in upper middle-class conditions safely in Kenya.. for at least 12 years before she sought refugee status in the Netherlands in 1992.

The accounts of various witnesses varied greatly from hers. According to them, she left Somalia prior to any mass violence,

and led a comfortable, upper-middle class life in neighboring Kenya, where she attended a Muslim Girls' school

and received a full western-style education with focus on the Humanities and Science. Her brother attended a Christian school.

I read Sister Ayaan's book because my childhood friend read it and she recommended it. She even let me borrow her book.

The people that are condemning Sister Ayaan need to pay attention to her message. She's an atheist, but she has respect for people that are believers. She's not like Bill Maher because he believes all religious people are mentally ill. Sister Ayaan has said that she has such strong beliefs because many male Muslims refuse to be progressive. Anytime a progressive Muslim speaks out, they are killed or attacked in some other way. She believes that progressive Muslims should leave the faith because the other Muslims refuse to accept them and it will be good for their safety.

After all Sister Ayaan has been through, I can understand why she is an atheist. She has had a hard life, so of course she's going to have some issues. However, she goes wrong when she puts the blame on Islam as a whole. You dont see children who were molested by priests blaming Catholicism for their issues. She is neglecting the fact that it was the people in her life who mistreated her due to cultural reasons and their own delusions of grandeur.

As far as the video discussion about life on Earth:

Islam teaches us that Allah’s creation is vast and beyond our comprehension. We are also taught that the more we explore and learn, the more we will come to believe in Allah. That is the Islamic position. So we assert without any hesitation that Allah caused the creation of the universe and that He set up the laws for its functioning. As Allah said:

"Behold! In the creation of space and the Earth and in the changing of night into day are indeed signs for people of understanding. Those who remember Allah standing, sitting and lying down, and contemplate the (wonders) of creation in space and the Earth. (They declare,) "Our Lord! You didn’t create all of this for nothing. So save us from the punishment of the fire." (Holy Quran Chapter 3: Verse 190-191)

Science, then, must increase our faith. It is wrong for anyone to close their eyes to what is right in front of them. For hundreds of years people have been finding fossils, bones and ancient artifacts which point to a hidden past we don’t know much about. Allah even commands us to travel over the Earth and learn from what we see. We humans have now seen much to challenge our understanding.

We know that Earth existed long before the appearance of humans. Allah says, "Wasn’t there a long period of time before humans were even mentioned?" (Holy Quran Chapter 76: Verse 1)

We also know from the geologic timetable that the Earth went through many ages before we came here. And in the ayat (or Quranic verse) that mentions this proof of Allah, we are given a very strong clue about the adaptability of life forms to their environment.

Allah said, "Don’t you see that Allah sends rain from the sky? With it We produce plants of various colors. And in the mountains are colored layers, white and red of various tones and some black in hue. And so too, among humans and crawling creatures and cattle. They are of various colors. Those among Allah’s servants who have knowledge truly fear Him, for Allah is Mighty and Forgiving." (Holy Quran Chapter 35: Verse 27-28)

So while we agree with the Creationists who say Allah made the universe, we disagree with them on how fast it was constructed and that Earth is the only center of focus for the Creator. Allah declares Himself to be the Lord of All the Worlds. Because we do not reject the evidence presented to us by Paleontologists (fossil hunters) and other scientists, we can accept some of what they say, also, about the origins of life on Earth and the existence of dinosaurs and other creatures in the fossil record. However, we read in Allah’s book that He caused it to happen and that by studying it we increase our faith in Him. Therefore, we disagree with those who say everything happened without Allah, by mere chance only.

"To Allah belongs the control of space and the Earth and Allah has power over all things." (Holy Quran Chapter 3: Verse 189)

Ours is the middle position even as Allah said we were created to be the middle community: never going to extremes. So we don’t accept, based on the evidence, the final positions of both sides. Rather, we accept what appears to be true and reject what appears to be false from each. The Quran is our standard, our determiner, and it has never let us down, nor will it ever do so.

For a Muslim, then, the evidence of dinosaurs, trilobites and ancient algae is not a threat to our beliefs. Rather, it is a confirmation of the power of Allah. As Allah said, "He has created horses and mules for you to ride and show; and He has created other (creatures) that you don’t know." (Holy Quran Chapter 16: Verse 8)

"Allah created every creature from water. Of them are some that creep on their bellies, some that walk on two legs and some that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills for He has power over all things. We have indeed sent signs that make things clear and Allah guides whom He wills to the straight way." (Holy Quran Chapter 24: Verse 45-46)

Who else but Allah could have made such a complex and mysterious universe? We must have pity on those who reject the proof of Allah’s existence for they will be the losers in the end.

Remember the verse that was listed before: Allah says, "He, (Allah,) created humans from a drop of sperm and then the same humans become clear arguers!" (Holy Quran 16: Verse 4)

Even a miraculous thing such as the fertilization of the egg cannot convince some people to believe in the creative energy of the Creator of the Universe.

Sister Muhammad, I Thank You for your enlightenment on these verses of The Holy Quran and for that, I thank The Most High for you.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali was referring to In her comparison of the philosophies of Western society has she perceive it versus the philosophy of Islam that she grew up with. I found It interesting the way she thought about Islam as a philosophy of the hereafter. The philosophy of liberal democracies of being a philosophy of life here on earth.

Now here’s when Sister Ayaan Hirsi Ali story got my attention, is when she was born into Islam, that she was groomed into thinking, that life on Earth was short, it’s temporary and all you have to do is to follow a series of obligations. Sister Ayaan Hirsi Ali, went on to say that she had to abstain from of things that are not permitted and she called it “The Haram.”

Ayaan Hirsi Ali also went into things that she was permitted, that she could enjoy but essentially her life on earth is a test, stating that Life, will start, real eternal life will start after the grave when you die. Now Sister Muhammad, this teaching that is in accordance to Christian instruction and belief as well.

The two angel’s philosophy I found very interesting, now Sister Ayaan Hirsi Ali went on to say that we have two angels here on either side of your shoulders, which you can’t see. Now this sounds like a deep believe as she related that she was told this by her mother, her grandmother, her Quran teacher, her father, when she lived in Saudi Arabia, she said that it was complete socialization.

Sister Muhammad, thank you for your patients while I set up this question: The Angel one on the left side and the angel one on the right side. Did you know about the two-angel’s philosophy, is that common teaching in Islam?

Is Islam a religion of peace? Is it compatible with Western liberalism? Or does Islam need a reformation

Yes Brother Deacon, the two angel's philosophy is a common teaching in many Islamic sects. These angels are called the kiraman katibin (or noble writers) who keep a record of our doings. During the Salat (prayer) or other Islamic based meetings, some worshipers acknowledge the two angels by reciting the words As Salaam Alaikum wa Rahmatullah (May God’s peace and blessings be upon you) while turning the head first towards the right and then the words are repeated while turning towards the left. This belief stems from Quran (Chapter 50: Verse 17-18), which declares: "Behold, two guardian angels appointed to learn a man’s doings learn and note them, one sitting on the right and one on the left. Not a word does he utter but there is a sentinel by him, ready to note it."perched on their right and left shoulders.

A tradition records that the angel on the right is more merciful and dominant than the angel on the left. The right angel represents the soul/personality of an individual and symbolizes one's will and sense of vitality. The left angel however, represents the automatic process which rules your emotions, your daily moods, and the way you respond to observed life situations. Upon further research I have discovered that the two angels have another, more symbolic meaning in male and female Muslims alike. The right angel represents the male role models in your life and how you perceive your husband, your father, your brothers, and other male descendants in your family. The left angel represents the female role models in your life and how you perceive your wife, your mother, your sisters, and other female descendants in your family. The left angel's influence slowly changes as time flows. When a child is born, the influence of the left angel is of paramount importance. Then as the child becomes of age (reaches maturity), the left angel's influence gradually shifts and involves other areas.

There is a book called "Essential Islam: A Comprehensive Guide to Belief and Practice," by Diane Morgan that discuss these two angels in more detail, among other topics in Islam.
