The Mississippi Department of Public Safety says the nooses were accompanied by handwritten signs referring to Tuesday's election as well as to lynchings — most of them in the state's turbulent past, but also one recent case that remains under investigation, of a black man whose body was found hanging in central Mississippi. The department posted photos of the signs on social media and sought information about them from the public.

One sign referred to the Tuesday runoff between appointed Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, who is white, and Democrat Mike Espy, who is black. The sign also read: "We need someone who respects the lives of lynch victims."

Another sign read: "We're hanging nooses to remind people that times haven't changed."

Neither Espy nor a Hyde-Smith campaign spokeswoman would comment on the nooses.

UPDATE – DPS RELEASES CONTENT OF SIGNS FOUND AT CAPITOL

The Department of Public Safety now says several people are responsible for putting nooses in the trees and placing several hand made signs near the entrance. DPS is releasing pictures of the signs which all reference the history of hangings and lynchings in the state. The release does not contain any pictures of the suspects taken from surveillance cameras but does say it plans to make more information public which could help identify the people who placed the items.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety is asking anyone who may have seen something in that area this morning or may have information on the identities of the people responsible, please contact the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation at 601-933-2652 or Central Mississippi CrimeStoppers at 601-355-TIPS.

According to the Tuskegee Institute, 4,743 people were lynched between 1882 and 1968 in the United States, including 3,446 African Americans and 1,297 whites.

FACT. From 1882-1968, 4,743 lynching's occurred in the United States. Of these people that were lynched 3,446 were black. The blacks lynched accounted for 72.7% of the people lynched. These numbers seem large, but it is known that not all of the lynching's were ever recorded because many were WHITE MOB LYNCHINGS.

Out of the 4,743 people lynched only 1,297 white people were lynched. That is only 27.3%. Many of the whites lynched were lynched for helping the black or being anti lynching and even for domestic crimes.

Most of the lynchings that took place happened in the South. A big reason for this was the end of the Civil War. Once black were given their freedom, many people felt that the freed blacks were getting away with too much freedom and felt they needed to be controlled and put in there place. Mississippi had the highest lynching's from 1882-1968 with 581. Georgia was second with 531, and Texas was third with 493. 79% of lynching happened in the South.

Of the lynching that did not take place in the South, mainly in the West, were normally lynching's of whites, not blacks. Most of the lynching in the West came from the lynching of either murders or cattle thief’s.

Although some states did have lynching's, some of them did not lynch any blacks. Arizona, Idaho, Maine, Nevada, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wisconsin were some states that did not lynch any blacks to record.

Steve, it looks like most, not all whites that was lynched, went through a court system and was hanged by a due process of law and not a warning to other blacks. Quite a few states did in fact lynch more white people than black. In the West these greater number of white lynching's was due to political reasons not racial reasons.

Now my experience of a WHITE MOD LYNCHING which I will never will forgot those angry WHITE FACES images in this live time,this happed when I was a child. MY REPLY:Now that is a good point there. I would also add the main cause of that mob mentality, is HATE. Hate groups continued to expand their reach in the United States last year during a tumultuous 12 months under TRUMP marked by racist violence, social media attacks and the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. I believe that HATE is a tool by the TOP 1% to keep the poor and the middle classes divide so, they can maintain power.
