Key takeaways from Day 6 of Derek Chauvin's trial in George Floyd's death

Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo took the witness stand in the murder trial of Derek Chauvin on Monday and testified the former officer violated numerous use-of-force and ethics policies in the fatal arrest of George Floyd, including the force's underlying motto to "protect with courage and serve with compassion."

Arradondo, the highest-profile witness yet to testify for the prosecution, went over page after page of his police force's policies on use-of-force, de-escalation and best practices, some of which he personally wrote.

Prosecutor Steve Schleicher asked Arradondo if he would describe the force Chauvin used on Floyd on May 25, 2020, as proper and according to the training of Minneapolis police officers.

"I absolutely do not agree with that," Arradondo answered. "That action is not de-escalation and when we talk about the framework of our sanctity of life and when we talk about the principles and values that we have that action goes contrary to what we're taught."

Arradondo said he drew his conclusions based on police body-camera, surveillance and bystander video he reviewed in the hours after Floyd was pronounced dead.

After being shown a photo, described as "Exhibit 17," of Chauvin digging his knee into Floyd's neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds while the handcuffed 46-year-old Black man was prone on the ground with two other officers holding him down, the chief said the tactic was not the type of "conscious neck restraint" his officers have been trained to use.

More light has come to the surface on Day 6 of Derek Chauvin's trial in George Floyd's death.

What was the term the chief used for when they're dealing with a mental case?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, April 5th 2021 at 8:27PM

YOUR QUESTION: What was the term the chief used for when they're dealing with a mental case?

MY REPLY: In this article, the term the chief used for when they're dealing with a mental case was
not covered. Now was covered was this:

"Once Mr. Floyd, and this is based on my viewing of the videos, had stopped resisting and certainly once he was in distress and trying to verbalize that, that should have stopped," Arradondo said. "

He said officers are trained to know how to assess a subject they are encountering for medical conditions, mental impairment, developmental disabilities and whether they are in the throes of a behavioral crisis or under the influence of drugs. The officers are also retrained on this annually, Arradondo said.

He said Floyd did not appear to be a threat to the officers or other citizens during the incident, and added that Floyd should have never been arrested for the minor offense of trying to buy a pack of cigarettes with a phony $20 bill, which is a misdemeanor.

It was one of those police acronyms, 3 characters. The chief was talking about one of his policies. You're no use Ron, I'll find it.

Steve Williams Monday, April 5th 2021 at 10:00PM

Ron, I'm talking about the Crisis Intervention Policy and the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT). Start watching at 4:30:34 if you missed it.

Steve Williams Monday, April 5th 2021 at 10:55PM

Actually, the acronym I was thinking of is EDP. Emotionally Disturbed Person. Starting at 4:33:55.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Monday, April 5th 2021 at 11:25PM

This is great that you found what you were looking for.

Now Steve, be honest, you were not responding to anything in this posted blog, now were you?

Steve Williams Monday, April 5th 2021 at 11:43PM

I was responding Ron. The Critical Intervention Policy, in light of Kane's bodycam, is the single most important takeaway of Day 6.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 12:14AM

OH! I KNOW THAT! Why are you trying to defend X- Police Office Derek Chauvin, when you can see for yourself Chauvin, still had his knee on the back of George Floyd's neck even after Floyd was non-responsive, you can see that right?

Steve Williams Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 12:15AM

See this?

"Arradondo, the highest-profile witness yet to testify for the prosecution, went over page after page of his police force's policies on use-of-force, de-escalation and best practices, some of which he personally wrote."

"de-escalation" Do you see that Ron?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 12:20AM

OH! I KNOW THAT! Why are you trying to defend X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin, when you can see for yourself Chauvin, still had his knee on the back of George Floyd's neck even after Floyd was non-responsive, you can see that right?

Now you saw and heard for yourself The Police Chief, tell you that what Chauvin did to Floyd was NOT what he was trained to do as a Police Officer.

Steve Williams Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 12:21AM

After today I'm more certain than ever, all four officers should have been tried together. Could it be Arradondo is just a typical politician who opportunistically went after the low-hanging fruit, i.e. Chauvin? This case should have been tried from the beginning, starting with Lane, who caused the situation to immediately ESCALATE.

Steve Williams Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 12:25AM

And because the case has been F-ed up like this, there is unlikkely to be justice for George Floyd.

Steve Williams Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 12:27AM

At least the Floyd's have $27 MILLION.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 12:35AM

Now where ever the family of George Floyd's got, now it is time for justice for Derek Chauvin, for his actions in the death of George Floyd's, bottom line.

It was X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin, who was the leading field training officer, who had used DEADLY FORCE in this case and no one else at this point Steve, Do you understand that?

Steve Williams Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 1:35AM

What I know is this Ron. The prosecution originally wanted all four tried together.

"Prosecutors had argued against dividing the trial, saying the evidence against all four is similar, the officers acted together and the public and witnesses should be spared the trauma of multiple trials."

The Judge over ruled in his court. One at a time will do just fine. The first one is: X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin.

Steve Williams Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 10:03AM

The judge was wrong. There won't be justice for George Floyd.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 10:52AM

That is your opinion and you are welcome to it.

Steve, the focus here is why George Floyd died in Police custody. You saw evidence of X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin kneeing on the back of Floyd's neck while George Floyd was face down in the street, handcuffed behind his back and you saw Chauvin standard of care for a person in his custody.

No Steve, This Judge is on the correct path to discovery in this case.

George Floyd had stop moving and Chauvin still had his knee on the back of George Floyd's neck.

Steve, if this was your son, who was neck was under the Knee of X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin for all that time, how would you handled this news after viewing this evidence in real time, after looking at him close-up, looking in the face of X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin face as your love one took his last breath, how would you handle that?

Steve Williams Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 11:07AM

This case is a mess Ron. The judge this morning was deciding what to do with Morries Hall. Morries Hall will be pleading the FIFTH, because he is exposed to a 3rd degree murder charge himself. Just because Chauvin was the last in a chain of fatal errors, he is no more guilty than the originator of theses events, Morries Hall. Just watch the tape from Cup Foods and you'll see this skank's operation. They were passing fake $20s so they could get real money to pay for drugs.

Steve Williams Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 2:01PM

We have learned this morning from the use-of-force lieutenant that Chauvin's leg was not on Floyd's neck but rather, across Floyd's shoulders. Were you watching Ron?

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 5:11PM

You don't have to run from this question Steve.

Steve Williams Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 9:32PM

It looks to me Ron like you are priming the mob. That's not a very noble purpose. Shame on you.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Tuesday, April 6th 2021 at 11:08PM

I asked you a question and the only mob you see is that BULL 💩 in your sick and sorry as- mind of yours.

You don't have to run from this question Steve.

Steve Williams Wednesday, April 7th 2021 at 8:39AM

NO Ron, If my son were alive I might answer your question. My son is dead and that connects me with Floyd in a way that you are not.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, April 7th 2021 at 8:48AM

That is just one of the reasons why I asked you this question. I know it brings back the pain of losing yours in the hands of a MAD COP, that has gone wild with his power.

X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin carried out an execution on the spot over a misdemeanor, WHY?

Steve Williams Wednesday, April 7th 2021 at 9:57AM

You have to start with Lane banging on Floyd's window and pulling his weapon. That was the first violation of policy and then they all violated their policy many more times, ending with Chauvin. If the judge would not have been in a rush, they could have waited until summer and tried them all then.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Wednesday, April 7th 2021 at 10:46AM

Chauvin's case is on now and what X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin was covered in Police Training and it is plain to see that Derek Chauvin carried out an execution on the spot over a misdemeanor and this case is the right case to go first, WHY?

Because George Floyd died under the illegal uses of DEADLY FORCE by X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin, Steve can't you see that?

or

Is it a race thing with you?

Steve Williams Thursday, April 8th 2021 at 9:29AM

George Floyd died from the effects of drugs.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Thursday, April 8th 2021 at 10:58AM

George Floyd died from a lack of oxygen due to a knee at the back of George Floyd's neck, who was lying face down in the streets, hand culled by X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin. This officer kept his knee on the back of George Floyd's neck for THREE LONG MINUTES after George stop moving, why was that Steve?

Did you think that X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin wanted George Floyd dead by taking that action?

Three minutes later, after George Floyd stopped moving, X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin still had his neck on the back of George Floyd Neck, Steve, what do you call that?

MURDER!!!

Steve Williams Thursday, April 8th 2021 at 1:22PM

It all started with "Morries" Hall, the drug dealer who won't testify because he himself is subject to a murder charge. All 4 officers violated MPD policies and they are not excused, but George Floyd died from the effects of drugs he voluntarily ingested. That's why he was paranoid and violent and ignored the sage exhortation of Charles McMillan that "YOU CAN'T WIN!" Man, you can't win.

Dea. Ron Gray Sr. Thursday, April 8th 2021 at 4:43PM

"Morries" is "NOT" on trial for the Murder of George Floyd, this X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin is on trial for the MURDER of George Floyd. This X Cop Derek Chauvin escalated a misdemeanor case, into the execution of George Floyd, Steve and that is what all this is about.

All of X- Police Officer Derek Chauvin trainers and superiors all say that that this Excessive Force was NOT needed once George Floyd stopped moving but this THUG still was applying that deadly force 3 minutes after Floyd stop moving. I guess Derek Chauvin was making sure that Floyd won't be pulling that trick, again... Right Steve?
