On February 2, 2009, the United States Senate confirmed Eric Holder as the first African American Attorney General in the United States by a vote in the affirmative of 75-21.
Holder had been nominated by President Barack Obama on December 1, 2008. He was formally installed on March 27, 2009. Eric Himpton Holder, Jr was born on January 21, 1951 in the Bronx, New York. After graduating from high school he attended and graduated in 1973 from Columbia University with a B.A. degree in American History. He later graduated with his law degree from Columbia Law School in 1976. After working in the Justice Department and serving as a Superior Court Judge in the District of Columbia, Holder was appointment by President Bill Clinton in 1993 as the first African American United States Attorney for the District of Columbia.
