On this day in 1988, the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences awarded its first-ever Grammy award for Best Rap Performance to DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (actor Will Smith) for their smash hit, “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” The other nominees included hip hop trailblazers LL Cool J ("Going Back to Cali"), Salt N Pepa ("Push It"), Kool Moe Dee ("Wild Wild West") and J.J.
