Richard Wright (author)

Richard Nathaniel Wright (September 4, 1908 – November 28, 1960) was an American author of novels, short stories, poems, and non-fiction. Much of his literature concerns racial themes, especially related to the plight of African Americans during the late 19th to mid-20th centuries suffering discrimination and violence. Literary critics believe his work helped change race relations in the United States in the mid-20th century.

Childhood in the South

Richard Nathaniel Wright was born on September 4, 1908, at Rucker's Plantation, between the train town of Roxie and the larger river city of Natchez, Mississippi. He was the son of Nathan Wright, a sharecropper, and Ella (Wilson), a schoolteacher.

Yes, Indeed....

One of the Greatest American Writers and Thinkers EVER....

I have no religion in the formal sense of the word ....

I have no race except that which is forced upon me.

I have no country except that to which I'm obliged to belong.

I have no traditions. I'm free. I have only the future.

― Richard Wright, White Man, Listen!

His parents were born free after the Civil War; both sets of his grandparents had been born into slavery and freed as a result of the war, can you imagine living in times like these?

AND....

Mr. Richard Nathaniel Wright believed and wrote the following..

“Men starve from a lack of self-realization as much as they can from a lack of bread.”

“The Negro is America's metaphor..our America is frightened of fact, of history, of processes, of necessity.

It hugs the easy way of damning those whom it cannot understand, of excluding those who

look different, and it salves its conscience with a self-draped cloak of righteousness..

..I feel that for white America to understand the significance of the problem of the Negro will

take a bigger and tougher America than any we have yet known.

I feel that America's past is too shallow, her national character too superficially optimistic,

her very morality too suffused with color hate for her to accomplish so vast and complex a task.

..Culturally the Negro represents a paradox:

Frankly, it is felt to be right to exclude him, and it if felt to be wrong to admit him freely.

..if, within the confines of its present culture, the nation ever seeks to purge itself of its color hate,

it will find itself at war with itself, convulsed by a spasm of emotional and moral confusion.

If the nation ever finds itself examining its real relation to the Negro, it will find itself doing infinitely

more than that..."

..I, Robert Powell, cannot remember if I just memorized these words in my youth, or I too thought them,..

BUT yes deaCON those Richard Nathaniel Wright quotes/poeticProse are my thoughts...
