I believe you are referring to Kofi Annan, who became the first black Secretary-General of the United Nations on January 1, 1997. He served in this position until December 31, 200612. Kofi Annan was a Ghanaian diplomat who played a significant role in reforming the UN bureaucracy, combating HIV/AIDS, and launching the UN Global Compact1. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 20011.

Annan joined the United Nations in 1962, working for the World Health Organization's Geneva office. He went on to work in several capacities at the UN Headquarters, including serving as the Under-Secretary-General for peacekeeping between March 1992 and December 1996.
