Beyonce White-Washed

Beyonce White-Washed

I know you've seen this already where Loreal took the liberty of "whitening" Beyonce in their ad. Today on The Today Show, Kathie Lee Gifford brought up the subject. She suggested that they only did it to showoff the highlights in Beyonce's hair and that it had nothing to do with race or racism.
Well...I'm not going to begin to speak for Loreal, but wouldn't darker skin show off the lighter hair better.
What I do know is that even within the African-American community there has always been an issue with light skin versus dark. I'm happy to see this generation is less preoccupied with skin tone, but even my mother's generation had a paper bag test to qualify to get into certain sororities.
Would Barack Obama be as popular if he was as dark as say Bernie Mac? And not for nothing, but I don't know of any dark-skinned blacks hosting or anchoring a major television network program. Oprah's about as dark as they get.
But tell me what you think. Are we still obsessed with light skin and dark skin?

Yes, when it is done in this fashion. It seems that the powers that be, are concern with it, so why shouldn't I have my concerns with it as well. Lets stop playing games. Why are we always subjected to this type of stuff. As if we can't see through all the rhetoric and subliminal messages. Beyonce looks like a total different person. The person that the mainstream is comfortable with. Another question, why did Beyonce allow this to happen? I mean, she has enough money, right. She's not struggling to get through college, she's struggling to pay rent, she's not struggling for money to pay after-school care for her children, so whats her reasoning for allowing this portrayal of her to happen. If my daughter saw this, she probably would be questioning her skin tone as well. So I guess, I will sit my daughter down and tell her the reason why Beyounce did this. One question I really don't no why. She already has the money and fame. What else could it be? Who is she role modeling for? Thanks Karen, I hope I'm not overanalyzing the topic you raised.

Unfortunately, I believe that this is still an issue in our society but I do believe that it is not as much of an obstacle with the laws and things like that changing no one can be discriminated against. But if affirmative action were to be taken out there is not any doubt in my mind we would be back in the medival time ages lol!

Nothing new here. But it's not as if Beyonce wasn't already helping push the lightening along voluntarily anyway.

Yeah, when it fits their purpose they go the other way doctoring the photos. Why not leave the photo as is? Now if the person has some bumps or scars, then I can understand the purpose for doing this. Racism is alive and well.

LOL...I thought pale was associated with unhealthy. White folks tan to get taht healthy look, yet they lighten up black folks to look, what? Unhealthy?

Mainstream prefers a lighter skinned black person......surprise....surprise.

Oprah is only dark if you take off the makeup. Look at her picture on O magazine and tell me she is the same color as she is without makeup. Anyhow, L'Oreal must make some pretty bad hair products if they have to lighten a person's skin tone to make the hair look good. It should be the hair that compliments the skin. I'll never buy L'Oreal now. Besides, they made Beyonce look like an albino. Nothing against albinos.

I think we should boycout all of these white hair care products and get back to our roots. Madame CJ Walker created this industry--how many of these people even know who she is?

I know exactly who she is and now it is the korean's that have a hook on the market. They band together and buy in bulk, I remember watching a business channel that had a discussion about this. The koreans even had the nerve to say that they did not want people of color to be able to thrive in this industry.

E, I'm sorry, I don't see any glow. She looks pale. Like someone dumped her in flour or something. I would like to think I know when someone or something is glowing but this doesn't fit that description. Although I could be wrong, with the new technology they have out there these days, anything is possible. Like Karen said earlier, Beyounce looks sick (unhealthy).
