No Blacks Allowed in This Chinese Bar

There is a story running online about a bar in China (see photo) banning blacks and other "social undesirables."
Here is the link to the story: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/19/n...

No. 1: If this is true, I would say the images that we and the media project of black people across the globe can definitely be a factor. How do you feel about that?

No. 2: If this is true, perhaps it's time that Chinese people pick up a real history book, where they will learn that much of what they were spouting as originating in China (from paper to math) actually was founded on the continent of Africa.

I feel strongly that it's time that black folks reclaim who we are. Programs like CNN's Black in America only helped to reinforce negative images of us. And networks like BET helped to set us back a few generations. But we can say, "No More!" We need to attack every time people try to define us in a negative way. We must set the record straight, not just for people in the world, but for ourselves, too.

And what's funny is that most Chinese folks I know here in the states are some of the nicest people I've met. Very open adn friendly. I hope this is isolated. Does anyone have any experiences with this?

Of course, I believe this story to be true, I'd heard about it before the Olympics began. But, I have two takes on this:

First, Chinese people are some of the most demented people on earth. We all see the ones that come to this country who learn our basic principles so that they can conduct business the "American" way. But in China, they lack basic appreciation for human rights. Look at their treatment of the Tibetans (?) today. If you can use your imagination, imagine a Chinese man or woman walking down th streets of China and defecating as they walk. And you think all Chinse people are smart and nice, huh?

So it doesn't surprise me that they can be openly raw in their own country like this. For all their perceived greatness, it's only ben within the last 30 years that they've actually modernized their city.

Secondly, it's not entirely their fault. WE put ourselves out there like that. You can't sell a perception that isn't there. Can you convince an entire country that horses fly in Russia while it isn't true?

I posted a blog a couple of weeks ago that I think fits here:

Okay guys, slow your roll. Not everyone comes to conclusions based on personal experience. Remember, for the most part China is a closed society. The everyday Chinese citizen is reacting based on what someone told them and not on their own experiences. Same for Chinese Americans, they really do listen to their elders. And apparently, same for the people that have posted a response to this blog. Always look in the mirror before presenting yourself to the world.

Karen, I too have interacted with open and friendly Chinese people. Of course there are always going to be exceptions. Here's something interesting, my 13 yr old son is beginning his 4th year of Chinese and he is fairly fluent in the dialog. I can't tell you how open, amazed and receptive they become when he begins speaking their language. How unexpected is that one - a black kid holding a conversation with a chinese person.

We should send these people a Thank You card. I agree with Mr. M. Jackson regarding the source from which their reasoning has came from. However, I do not believe all Chinese people are racist, it is just the practice of this particular resturant (if it is true) in all give thanks. It really could be doing black folks a favor.
