Whites as a Minority (PART 2)

If you have black skin but speak Spanish, which box will you check on a Census? Black or Hispanic? A member asked how is it possible that the black population will remain about the same in that study that found that whites will no longer be a racial majority. Well, we can talk about drugs, AIDS, and other diseases decimating our ranks. Or we can look at what's really going on.
As a Puerto Rican what they are and most will say: Spanish. As a Mexican what he is and he will most likely say "Spanish!" Spanish is a language, No. 1. And the Spanish people are Europeans, like the British and the French. if a Puerto Rican, Dominican or Mexican went to Spain talking about being Spanish they would be run out of that country. They are black. In fact, 80 percent of Mexicans are of African descent. How do you think those pyramids got there? Puerto Ricans are mostly a mixture of Native peoples, Africans and Spaniards. Dominicans are on the island of Hispanola, with Haiti on the other side. Do Dominicans have nappy hair and brown skin?
So are blacks only 12%-15% of the population? Really?

Your commentary sounds very much like that of Paul Mooney. He contends that what you speak is not what you are. To paraphrase, he speaks English but no one is going to mistake him for Prince Charles. Those Spanish-speakers who could identified themselves as white did so because of the inherent benefits of being White in the Americas. Since race is a made up value anyway, I don't see how all of any one group could fit into such dubious racial categories, in any case.

We have to watch all of the plans that are being put down. It's getting crazy. Thanks for your comments.

The census is definitely trying to make the number of blacks seem smaller than it really is. I'm not sure if I would consider Mexicans as 'black' even though some of them probably do have a small percentage of African blood. I would however consider most Puerto Ricans and Dominicans and Cubans as black. Most of them have African ancestry and some European mixed in, just like us American 'blacks'. So how is it, that just because they speak spanish, they are not black? Even blacks being born in this country that have parents from spanish speaking caribbean and south america somehow don't think they are black. Keep their mouth shut and they'll experience the same discrimination the rest of us experience...

I had a few thougts just days ago and it came to mind again after seeing an HBO commercial for a new show on Mondays that will highlight "black stories". The guitarist Slash was on there and he said something like he wasn't considered very black nor was he considered very white. An important matter here is how to define "black". You have to be a certain shade? Do you have to speak a certain way? Does one person on our mother's side of the family have to be black? In many cases Haitians look black because of their skin. However, an african american would have a hard time understanding them when they speak. Haitians might not consider themselves black. We might be quick to do so.

Nice choice of topics. A little controversy can't kill you. Check out a few of mine. http://double7film.com/community/?tag=tieu...

Karen, this blog just brought something to my mind about how all of a sudden official forms (at least where I live) now ask what was your first language? Seeing this before just caused me to think well maybe it has to do with being illegal or something. But now that I look at Dr Hines comment, this takes on a new role in my mind about this matter.Could be some kind of minority-majority Ethnic check, huh???

I always smile and put in Ebonics. Let them deal with this truth...If they ever figure out what Ebonic is beyond all of the negatives they tend to use to say what it is. I do know that 'Standard English' was not my first language. Standard English get a lot of men who use it labeled "gay" which is a shame, but...as the saying goes, "Only in America".
