States are rebelling, a commissioner resigned and the panel is facing legal scrutiny.

Commission On Election Integrity met each other for the first time during a June 28 conference call, Vice President Mike Pence and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R), the panel’s leaders, made it clear they wanted the committee’s work to be unbiased.

The commission says legal review requirements don’t apply to it.

That same day, Kobach sent a letter to all 50 states, requesting any “publicly available” information on voters, including highly sensitive information such as their voting history, information regarding felony convictions and the last four digits of their Social Security numbers. The letter immediately prompted a bipartisan backlash as Democratic and Republican election officials declined to provide sensitive voter information. The White House has tried to downplay resistance to the probe, releasing a statement saying reports that nearly every state was resisting the probe were “fake news.”

Now, after less than two weeks of activity, the commission, convened after Trump’s unsubstantiated claim millions voted illegally last year, is under fire before it has even looked at a single voter file. The backlash has undermined the work of commissioners, as election officials have openly questioned why the commission needs highly sensitive personal information. Trump himself has also undermined the suggestion the probe was convened to look broadly at confidence in elections, calling it a “voter fraud panel” in a tweet.

A Yale-trained lawyer, Kobach has served as counsel to the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) since 2004. IRLI is the legal arm of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), a group whose leaders have historical ties to white supremacists and eugenicists and who have made numerous racist statements.[1] He joined IRLI after a two-year stint as a White House fellow working in the U.S. Justice Department under Attorney General John Ashcroft during the Bush administration.

One test case for voter fraud vs. suppression: Sparta, Ga.
Values and ideals Georgia has become a major test case for a nation seeking to balance fraud concerns against the constitutional right to vote.

July 10, 2017 Sparta, Ga.—The tale of disenfranchisement in this Southern town starts with a squirrel.

In 2014, the rodent chewed some wires at the historic Hancock County, Ga., courthouse in downtown Sparta, Ga., about 100 miles from Atlanta.

A fire ensued, destroying the county’s entire voting roll – more than 1,100 names.

The next year, however, white county board members challenged 187 mostly black voters following complaints that they actually didn’t live in the precinct. Fifty-three people, nearly all African-Americans, were kicked off the rolls at a board meeting.

Marion Warren, a city election official, happened to be present. When his county counterparts heard a motion to begin challenging voters, Mr. Warren’s camera rolled.

The Hancock Board of Elections immediately started rebuilding the rolls by urging voters to come in and register.

His footage of a barely-attended hearing in a small American town led to a deeper investigation. Earlier this year, a settlement was reached between the county and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights. Once it’s signed off on, it will make Hancock County the first jurisdiction to earn federal election oversight since the United States Supreme Court invalidated part of the Voting Rights Act in 2013.

Trump’s new ‘voter fraud’ commission is already suppressing the vote in Florida
By Sarah K. Burris

The recent request by Kris Kobach, who is serving as President Donald Trump’s head of his so-called “voter fraud” commission to look into the alleged 3 million illegal votes, is already scaring voters.

According to The Orlando Sentinel, Florida voters are desperately trying to figure out how they can “unregister” to vote out of fear.

Seminole County Supervisor of Elections Michael Ertel has already received 15 phone calls from voters begging to opt out after Florida said it would comply with the request to hand over personal data.

Ertel was able to convince the people who called that it’s better to stay on the rolls. However, he said that the fears are unfounded because Florida will not be giving information that is not already publicly available.

Critics See Efforts by Counties and Towns to Purge Minority Voters From Rolls By MICHAEL WINESJULY 31, 2016

SPARTA, Ga. — When the deputy sheriff’s patrol cruiser pulled up beside him as he walked down Broad Street at sunset last August, Martee Flournoy, a 32-year-old black man, was both confused and rattled. He had reason: In this corner of rural Georgia, African-Americans are arrested at a rate far higher than that of whites.

But the deputy had not come to arrest Mr. Flournoy. Rather, he had come to challenge Mr. Flournoy’s right to vote.

The majority-white Hancock County Board of Elections and Registration was systematically questioning the registrations of more than 180 black Sparta citizens — a fifth of the city’s registered voters — by dispatching deputies with summonses commanding them to appear in person to prove their residence or lose their voting rights. “When I read that letter, I was kind of nervous,” Mr. Flournoy said in an interview. “I didn’t know what to do.”
